Is the upgraded 722.9 transmission pan necessary

Is the upgraded 722.9 transmission pan necessary
I'm planning to do the transmission service on my 09 C350. I've read on several posts recommending that the transmission pan should be upgraded to the new front slopping one if I have the old one. Car has had the trans serviced one time at a dealer. Would a dealer upgrade the pan as a routine? What year did Mercedes start using the new one? Is it even required to upgrade? Seems like the old style uses the black overflow tube while the new uses the white? Is that correct?
