Do the map updates require a firmware update?

I just purchased a 2 disk map update for my 2008 c300 I never got to update either COMMAND or the maps. I've read in some places it's fine and in others that it had boot loops. Which one is the correct outcome? Thank you

Hi!
I have experience the same situation. And i must warn you that if you update till V11 there should be no problem.
If you update to V12, you are in a serious situation that your unit will enter in a loop mode. I updated my unit from V11 to V12 without updating firmware and go my unit to loop. And there was nothing that i could do then. My solution was to get my car to a Mercedes dealer and tell them to update the firmware. They thought that i wanted the maps but i insisted that i wanted the firmware only! That cost me 40 € in Portugal.
So my advice to you is, update the firmware in the dealer (it can only be updated there) and then in your home update the maps.

If you require firmware versions to compare, just ask for and i will tell you firmware version before and after.

Wow, only 40 €? Dealers here in the US wouldn't even park your car for that.

That price is actually unbelievable. The last time I asked my nearest dealer, they quoted me $250 and that's after I assured that it wasn't the maps. So I have to pay twice the money to install the maps alone... I really regret not getting command updated while my warranty was still valid. My 08 is getting a recall for the airbag systems so I'll ask again in person, maybe they will add it in for free with the recall repairs. Just to make sure how do I check my fw version? Is it the HU version in the engineering menu? I think mine said 2007 I bought the car the first month the new car was released so I'm not surprised.

Ya... Here to update maps the dealer want 200 € each update. But i insisted that i only wanted the firmware update. They first refused to do it but after i insist they did it. Just 40€. And then i updated the maps to V12. I think is still the last version.

My NTG4 unit version before firmware update was:
FL Ver.: BLD-NR-204 1.43
Navi Ver.: 01.15.08_ECE
CPU Ver.: 10200:00
SWDL Ver.: 91.15.01
Maps version: V11

So now my NTG4 Command unit version is:
FL Ver.: BLD-NR-204 1.45
Navi Ver.: 02.15.01_ECE
CPU Ver.: 10200:00
SWDL Ver.: 11.15.00
Maps version: V12 (2014 / 2015)
Map navteq ES1800-00 13Q2

But i must say that some w204 2008 - 2011 with NTG4 have newer firmware as this:
BLD-NR-204 2.02
04.02.10_ECE

Maybe those newer units with different hardware.

In my case, the dealer told me that they connected the car to the STAR diagnosis and they updated with the firmware that was available to my VIN.
Hope it helps you...

Thank you for the detailed answers but I'm starting to wonder if the boot loop only occurs on the European NTG4 equipped cars. As I have read mixed opinions. I received my disk today and the person who sold me the disks said he tested them on an old firmware NTG4 and it worked without a hitch except for the fact that he had to put the 2nd disk in slot 2 for it to correctly read. If I don't get any confirmation for this I'll probably just go ahead updating over the weekend. I will also post my results after to acknowledge future users. By the way, I can un-boot loop the device by going to the dealership and updating the FW? Thank you

No problem. Here to help what i can.
Well, i just know that in european cars that can happen. Because the information i got, is from a european ntg4 group. Dont know if that applies to American versions.
That bit of information to put the 2nd disk in slot 2 is incorrect, because when disk 1 is finish, the NTG4 unit will eject disk1 and ask for disk2! But is just a matter of procede with the installation and will see what happens.
To your last question, dont know for sure. With mine, dealer got it to work. But i have heard others that they needed to buy the HDD with newer firmware and then update the firmware.
My advice: get the firmware update! And get first a quote for that, the firmware and not the maps! Just the firmware.

I ended up updating. This was the 2015 v14? Of NA maps. It worked perfectly. I now have new POI icons. And the COMMAND firmware is the oldest you will probably find on mine. I got the car the week of its new redesigned c class release. So North American owners don't hesitate to update! Just for disk 2 just press enter on the eject and insert notification and eject disk 1 by your self and you must install the disk 2 in the second slot. Only for old 08 c classes.

So I did an update recently and my NTG4 actually did get stuck in that reboot loop. Meanwhile I "fixed" it by getting a new NTG4 unit on ebay.

Is there a way to bring the original unit back to life?

Guessing You're from Europe? It was suggested that you visit the dealer and have the fw updated there.

An independent shop tried to diagnose and flash the unit but had no luck. They wanted $200 as well but including the fix and didn't charge me since they didn't succeed.

That's really odd I live in San Jose, and I had a firmware from 2006 so it's about as old as it gets! What year is your model? Also what version of maps were you updating with?

Yup same for me as well. Would you mind me asking where you got your disk from? Also during the update were you able to use other features such as radio etc.

That's what I mean^^ The thing is I love the car, but with free/always up-to-date maps through your phone I'm not willing to shell out $250 for an update. At $50 I was ok with it and went ahead. It was just the regular update procedure as you'd expect. At the end it rebooted and then got stuck

Right I totally get the phone navi vs car.
Maybe you got a bad copy? Do you still have the disks?
I still have no idea why this happens to some and not others. Have you been updating regularly? So before this version you had the version right before it?

Yeah sorry about that didn't read closely enough. I got the message haha. If you still have the discs you might be able to cross check them with mine (which worked) and see if the disks have the same data on them. As of right now other than European cars, this seems like the only feasible outcome.

I have a 2009 c300. My firmware is 08.15.01. I bought two burned copies of the v14 North America maps on eBay and they updated fine. I still have them if someone is interested.
