Why an X-pipe on the c-300?
Whether one chooses an H or X depends on what will fit the vehicle, and the sound preferred. The louder and more noticeable your exhaust is, the more pronounced the difference is between H and X pipes. On a high performance V8, H pipes will lend a deeper bass tone to the overall sound, while X pipes tend toward a smoother, higher-pitched sound (listen to a Sprint Cup race at Daytona or Atlanta). X pipes have also been found to have a slight top-end HP edge over H pipes, but the H generally delivers slightly better low end and midrange torque.
For something like a C300, the sound differences would likely be unnoticeable if the stock mufflers are left in place. If aftermarket mufflers are used, there may be a small audible difference.
Hope this helps some.
Please note, I have not seen, heard, driven or ridden in a C Class with a modified exhaust, so can't vouch personally for the sound.
