Why an X-pipe on the c-300?

Hey guys I have been searching exhaust stuff for the C-300 and noticed people do an x-pipe. My question is why do people do an x pipe an not just run straight pipes in that section?

X-pipe helps with exhaust scavenging and produces a different tone than straight pipes. I'd say the sound from an x-pipe sounds much better/more exotic than straight pipes would.

Would this also be the case in lets say the smaller engines like the 180,200,250 CGI models?

Crossover pipes of either H or X design are required in 'true' dual exhaust systems such as those used by many V6 and V8 (or even V12) engines. True duals means there are separate pipes running from each exhaust manifold, through a cat and muffler on each side. The crossover balances the exhaust pressure pulses exiting the engine and allow, as Jared noted above, improved scavenging and increased overall performance. In addition, V-type engines almost always sound far better with a crossover (small block Chevys sound like popcorn poppers without one!). Inline engines such as the 4-cylinder turbo in the C250, inline sixes such as many BMW engines and also various inline diesel engines don't require a crossover, as those designs utilize only one manifold/pipe.
Whether one chooses an H or X depends on what will fit the vehicle, and the sound preferred. The louder and more noticeable your exhaust is, the more pronounced the difference is between H and X pipes. On a high performance V8, H pipes will lend a deeper bass tone to the overall sound, while X pipes tend toward a smoother, higher-pitched sound (listen to a Sprint Cup race at Daytona or Atlanta). X pipes have also been found to have a slight top-end HP edge over H pipes, but the H generally delivers slightly better low end and midrange torque.
For something like a C300, the sound differences would likely be unnoticeable if the stock mufflers are left in place. If aftermarket mufflers are used, there may be a small audible difference.
Hope this helps some.

Is there any drone and I mean ANY drone with the X pipe? I bought an X pipe but haven't installed yet because I'm afraid of drone. I've read that there is no drone when I purchased and later read that there is some.

If you're leaving the remainder of the exhaust stock- cats, mufflers, etc., there should be very little change in sound at all, and there *shouldn't* be any interior resonance with just that mod.

Please note, I have not seen, heard, driven or ridden in a C Class with a modified exhaust, so can't vouch personally for the sound.

It is very slight imo, but its been many years since I've put in the xpipe so my memory of the stock exhaust may not be perfect.

Do not believe there is any drone... But then again I listen to music at all times when driving at about half volume. The main difference in putting in an x-pipe comes during cold starts and about 3K-4K RPM

No drone at all.
