Question 2008 Mercedes C230 cold start noise

Here is the noise:


Any idea what is the problem? The noise happens only during cold start (maximum 30-45 seconds).

Sounds like worn bearings on something like a pulley, alternator, etc. But it's odd it only does it cold. I've been getting driven nuts by a whine in my car that the dealers can't seem to fix.

Mercedes seems to have big issues with anything attaching to a belt or chain across all their models.

Your secondary air pump is kaput.

Secondary air injection pump is malfunctioning, probably a bearing inside of it. It'll need replacing soon and you'll likely get a check engine light soon if/when it completely fails

The one I linked is the aftermarket bosch unit, which is identical as far as I can tell.. The OE one is here on ECS

To Cvx5832 - i am having the same problem too. It started about 2 months ago. Went to Indy shop and confirmed the secondary air injection pump is the problem.He said to just wait till the Check engine light comes on as it is very expensive to replace. He quoted $1500 Canadian.

TO Funkwagen - Thanks for the link on the aftermarket bosch unit. Would you know if this fits a 2008 c300 4matic? I can see its on sale for $169 US that's 78% off MSRP?
and lastly can this be a DIY project? Thanks to everyone

I wouldn't wait for a CEL to come on. No day like today to deal with a problem you already know is there. And $1500 is just nuts.

Send or post your VIN. I'll look up the specific part on EPC.

My stepfather has changed my Secondary Air Injection Pump this morning. My car is working fine so far... I'm pretty sure you have identified correctly the problem :-)

I have a check engine light for a while (code P0128). Do you think it was related to my old Air Injection Pump? Do I need to reset the system? If yes, how???

Unrelated to your SAP issue. That's a thermostat code, but likewise an easy fix.

Don't ignore it if you have the means. They often get stuck open, but sometimes they get stuck closed. Then what would have been an inexpensive fix becomes a nightmare.
