HELP!! P0116 AND FAN WON'T TURN OFF! KILLING BATTERY
Hey!
So I just erased the codes for my alternator (which was the only code showing!) and IMMEDIATELY I got a code for Engine Coolant Temperature!
Now my car is off but the fan keeps running!!
.
Any takers??
EDIT:
OOPS...
It was my fault 100%...
Left the car running while cleared codes. I don't think the ECU was expecting the value it got from the ECT as a starting value.
Maybe if the car thinks the ECT sensor is broken it will leave the fan on for some time after the car is off in order to ensure nothing gets fried from heat that the ECU can't see due to the bad ECT sensor?
Just a thought...
The Fix: Car on but not running. Clear codes. Wait 10 seconds. Turn car on. Voila.
AKA I'm dumb... I will leave this here incase anyone &@#&s up like me. Hahaha.
Moral of the story. Don't do dumb sh&t.

After clearing codes a dozen times the proper way, I did the same thing today. While I likely would have cleared the codes again to see if it corrected, it was nice to run across this within minutes to know how I screwed up. I won't ever try that again!
Thanks!

No problem! That's exactly why I left this thread up!

Another Muppet here....................Just cleared O2 sensor code with engine running and fan went it overdrive. Turned off engine, locked the car and walked away, but only for a few seconds as the fan was crazy loud!
Connected up the OBD reader and P0116 appeared. Cleared that (with engine off!!) and all good now.
Glad no one was about
