2008 c300 in limp mode/ check engine light on

Hey, I'm new to the Merc world. Picked up a 2008 C300 sport a little while ago and have recently run into an issue.

After a two hour trip today, I started getting hard shifts with a noticeable "clunk". The highlight around the gear indicator disappeared along with the S/C and I had no acceleration. (Limp mode from what I've read) The check engine light popped on as well.

Currently, 4 hours later, the car is not in limp mode, but the check engine light is still on.

This seems to be a common issue with earlier models as I've read a lot of threads were people have had similar symptoms, but what I haven't seen is, how this issue is fixed. So, that said, does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks

The first thing you want to do is have the car scanned and then post the codes, when I mean scanned I mean with a tool that can read all the control modules.

Get ready for some real big bucks!!
