Ball joint/bearing fire

Hi my wheel bearing went on fire yesterday and mechanic and RAC had never seen anything like this happen to merc before has anyone had similar issue and can shed light on cause cost atound £600 damage 😕

cause=defective wheel bearing\seal and or no lubrication---the good news is that with he fire the bearing will come off easier
