My operators manual tells me they recommend Mobil oil. Then it shows the options depending on the climate where you live. I personally use Mobil1 0W40 European. There is a lot of useful info in the Operators manual. Here's my manual, yours specs may be different since its a different engine.
It is strange that my car's oil capacity is 5.5 liters but it took 6 liters and it is still not full but in the middle between MIN and MAX on cold engine. How is this possible? I am confused again...
This is a little worrying... is there a logical explanation?
According to the Operators Manual the proper oil level is between the Min and Max markings, so right in the middle. On my dipstick there are 3 dots, the level should be right at the middle dot.
Looks like it takes 2.1 quarts of oil to move the level from Min to Max.
I did my oil a few days ago, actually replaced the oil filter housing gasket and the oil cooler gasket, sucked out the oil with my 12v fluid pump plus I went under the car and removed the drain plug so I'm fairly sure the engine was bone dry or as close as it could be. Also the car was parked over a day and a half while i took my time on the job so it had plenty of time to drain all the old oil. I put in 7.5 quarts than ran the engine to get everything flowing and the oil is showing in the middle on the dipstick. The manual says 7.4 quarts capacity.
@TimC300 Min to Max on most Mercedes dip sticks is 2L.
Mercedes Benz’s recommendation of Mobil 1 was because of a marketing campaign featuring Mobil 1 as factory fill for a number of manufacturers. I think they gave Mercedes some sort of compensation.
I usually use Mobil 1 but don’t want to be married to any brand. I think we’re better off without a brand recommendation. The Approved Operating Fluids list (BeVo) is the proper reference.
sure, I wasn't recommending any specific brand. I try to be careful with my words and simply pointed out that in my operators manual it does say that they recommend Mobil oil, I even posted the page where it is written. Then I said what oil I personally use. Maybe I should have also stated why I use Mobil1, which is it is on the Mercedes approved list, I can find it locally at Walmart for a low price, I'm always finding cash back rebates for Mobil1 on the Mobil website, plus like I already said it appears Mercedes does recommend Mobil oil (for whatever reason), and just in general when I think Mobil I think quality. For the rebates I recently sent in one for $6 back on each 5 quart jug and it was $26 per jug. It used to be $10 rebates. If they don't have cash back rebates they sometimes offer neat items, I got a nice insulated cooler Mobil1 backpack previously. So if you do decide to go with Mobil1 I do recommend you go on there website and see if they have any rebate offers.
Plus in the first sentence of this thread the person does ask which type and brand of oil to use.
The "store brands" at AutoZone and Advance will be just fine. It's what I've used for 3+ years now for my '13 C300 4matic.
1.) Advance: Fram 5w40 or 0w40 European Formula
2.) AutoZone: STP 5w40 or 0w40 European Formula
Go with a quality wool filter if you can. However, if you're changing consistently at regular intervals, any should do the job.
For the oil filter I go with the pleated fleece Mann-Filter. Im pretty sure thats what Mercedes filters are since Mann is printed on them. I dont put many miles on my mercedes so ill change the oil once a year, the oil filter is so easy to replace I have replaced twice a year. Ill also say that I found them for the best price at eEuroparts, $6.50 for the HU 718/5 X. I use the Mann air filters too. I think the issue with aftermarket parts is sometimes they are not the same exact size and dont fit well.

When I first got my Mercedes I was searching around on what oil filter to use and remember coming across many articles on why the MB or Mann filter is the way to go and that some aftermarket filters wont stand up well. Looks like the MB and Mann are more robust. I never had a vehicle that used a cartridge type oil filter before and thought it was odd, but now I think of it as an advantage because you can clearly see how well the filter is holding up, can also check it better for any contamination where the canister type you cant see anything unless cutting it apart.
