What motor oil to put? I am confused...
It is time for an oil change and I am confused what oil type and brand to choose. I read so many different opposing opinions that the more I read the more confused I get.
My car (C250) is running an OEM Mercedes-Benz oil but it is too expensive and I am thinking about switching to a cheaper alternative brand which is 229.5 approved.
I was considering Shell Helix Ultra because the price is good and it is said to be used in Ferrari (I guess it should be good then?). Is Shell Helix Ultra a good oil and which type should I go for 0w-40 or 5w-40? Which is better and is there a noticeable difference which I can sense?

Both should work but I went with 0W-40 synthetic Mobil 1 Euro car formula since where I buy they don't stock it in 5W-40. I live in a climate where it can be cold in spring and fall so 0W-40 seemed like a good choice. I don't drive my car in winter so 5W-40 would have been good too.
Up here the Mobil 1 goes on sale frequently at my local Canadian Tire and I can get a 4L jug for about $38 CAD which is pretty cheap

I have used Shell Helix Ultra 5w-30 in my diesel for many years. One of the largest oil companies in the world .
If you live in Death Valley buy the 5w-40 or Wisconsin the 0w-40. Easy. Or just the cheapest or most accessible.

Where I live, Mobil 1 can be found everywhere but I am looking for an oil which not only meets but it is approved under the MB 229.5 which seems to be a tough job here - probably because 90% of the cars are diesels or I don't know. There are so many similar but different names of the oils... but in the end all Mobil 1s here are under other MB standards but not the 229.5.
Thanks for the response about the Shell Helix Ultra. I am glad you are satisfied and I will go for it because the price is good. Probably the 5w-40 will be best for me.

Yeah, they all say "For Mercedes, BMW and etc." but if you start looking for MB-Approved 229.5, it becomes harder. There are some oils which state "Meets or exceeds MB 229.5" but according to Daimler, they are not compliant with the standard MB 229.5. It must be "MB-Approved 229.5"...

It is strange that my car's oil capacity is 5.5 liters but it took 6 liters and it is still not full but in the middle between MIN and MAX on cold engine. How is this possible? I am confused again...
This is a little worrying... is there a logical explanation?

Mine is C250, it is a 4 cylinder engine and takes 5.5 liters according to Mercedes (not sure how much it is in quarts) but the engine has taken more than the specification which worries me a bit...

5.5 litres seems correct. I question whether you have the correct dip stick. check with your dealer & compare.

Mobil 1 0W40. I've tried several and run several UOAs. The Mobil 1 is the best oil for the money and it's easy to buy.

Just caution:
i saw on one post about diesel!! If your car is on gas, it must be MB-Approved 229.5 (should be on the bottle).
If your car is on diesel, it should be MB-Approved 229.51!
For reference, my W204 CDI220 2008 i put Motul X-CLEAN+ 5W30 MB-Approved 229.51.

Your engine requires an oil meeting the specifications of Mercedes Benz operating fluids sheet 229.5. They are many. Choose one available in your location from this long list:
