Brakes & Rotors replacement cost

I have been hearing a squeaking or squealing noise when I slowly brake my car, usually at slower speeds. I am guessing, if anything is truly wrong, that my rear pads might be starting to wear, as that's where the sound seems to be coming from. I called my local MB dealer here in Rhode Island, and they quoted me at approximately $1,400 for pads/rotors, front and rear, or about $700 respectively. This includes diagnosis, parts, labor, taxes/fees.

Any thoughts on this price? Good? Bad? Fair?

Have an 09 C300 4Matic with about 30K on the engine and these are the original pads/rotors still on the vehicle.

Do it your self. The total cost for new rotors, pads, sensors, grease, set screw will be $420 at the top end.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/

https://www.ecstuning.com/

Both have complete kits for your car, fcp has very good videos on how to do your brakes. And both sites have different kits, original or after market, your choose. Do a search there are plenty of postings regarding what type of pads and rotors people have used.

I recently did my rear brakes the worst part was getting the old rotors off after that it was an easy job. It is easier than you think.

OP Where do you live? Here in the Greater Toronto Area I paid $430 with a set of wipers at exoparts.com.

Great prices for OEM stuff.

Thank you. I shopped around and found a reputable indy mechanic who works on MBs through a friend of mine who owns a shop (my friend doesn't work on MBs). The indy shop quoted me at about 850. I am going to research the DIY and see about possibly doing that. If I don't go that route, what are your thoughts at the $850? Also, I asked the mech what brand parts he would be using; he said he would be using Bendix. Do you have any experience with them or any idea about them? Are they a good aftermarket brand?

My car had 28k when it needed rear pads, not hard since I have the tools. Interestingly, the pads had adhesive on the back that attaches to the caliper, I assume for nvh reasons. I used OEM pads, my fronts are still original and good though, maybe 50% left. FYI, no reason to do front brakes if they are not needed, that's an upscale tactic.

If you think that's bad I got quoted $2380 front and rear . That don't sound right to me..

I did mine a few weeks ago. $150 rear pads and rotors, and they are upgraded!

This is assuming you live in USA.

I do, I think my problem is suspension tho and not brakes after thinking about it. Wife hits pot holes a lot in the winter here in NY...

Gonna give it a go.

The FCPEuro video, which Nelson suggested, had me like, "Wow, that's all there is to it?" I'm gonna go the DIY route. I have all the tools in the videos, so it's just a matter of getting the parts. 4 rotors (2 front/2 rear), front and rear pad sets, and the sensors for each. Am I missing anything (e.g. parts, miscellaneous items)?

If you buy a complete set from one of the vendors you get everything including grease for the slide pins and the set screw for the rotors. Things you might need is some anti-seize, and PB blast to spray on the rotors if they are rusted on to the wheel hub, brake caliper cleaner and some tunes.

Agreed. All can be picked up at an autozone or something for <$15 total.

If your brake indicator message is not coming up perhaps the brake pads do not need changing. Check them out first. Take the rear wheels off and have a look. Normally the front pads go first

My back brakes' indicator never showed, because the outside pad wore down first. I heard a metal scraping sound and took the rear wheel off and that is when I noticed that the outside rear pad was down to the rivets. The inside pad still had some material left and was not worn enough for the sensor to go off.
