What's the latest version of the COMAND firmware?
Can anyone tell me what the latest version of the COMAND firmware is? I'm curious to know how old the firmware is on my recently acquired C350 CDI.
The car has been very well maintained but I don't know whether the firmware is likely to have been updated since the car was bought during normal services.

There are two ways. Far and away the easiest is to ask your MB dealer to do it. Several members have invented a Bluetooth problem and asked their dealer to do it under warranty. I don't know how long your warranty lasts, but that may no longer be an option.
Alternatively, you can buy the update CD second hand. Apparently it can take a couple of hours during which time the ignition has to be on. Some people have attempted to do this with pirated disks and ended up bricking their COMAND. This has also happened in some cases with genuine disks where the disk capacity wasn't sufficient to apply the update so be careful if you aren't sure what you are doing.

Ok thanks. Won't be doing it then. MB dealer wanted to charge a few hundred dollars. Rip off.

The newest is NTG 5.5 currently only offered in the w213 new e class. For our w204 I think 4.5 may be the the best we can get.

There are people here mixing things!
The Audio20, NTG4, NTG4.5 and NTG4.7 are diferent systems, with there own firmware / operative system!
The firmware can only be update at the dealer, by paying or within garanty. Updating the firmware is mandatory for example in NTG4 updating to V12 or newer maps navigation versions...
There is someone that says the update process takes about 2-3 hours and can be done at home. That is just for updating MAPS for NTG4! Not the firmware!
You can update maps for NTG4.5 and NTG4.7 at home but need to buy to the dealer a specific code!
So, firmware is one thing, updating the maps is another thing!
Just go by the dealer and ask them to update the firmware, not the maps! It takes 30 minute...

Is this definitely true? My COMAND firmware hasn't ever been updated and I've bought some 16/17 map DVDs online from someone who told me that it didn't matter which firmware version I was running.

You can install the maps with any firmware version! The problem is that if you have an older firmware version (cant say which), after updating to v12 or newer, after you turn on the command, there will be a message like "activating navigation...". And that message will stay forever till you update the firmware. Everything will work except navigation!
This is true for NTG4. Cant say for NTG4.5 or NTG4.7!
Updating the firmware on the dealer is cheap! It cost me 50 €.

Dead post is live again. Can someone explain how to check the firmware, is it available to view via the secret COMAND menu (Asking specifically for NTG4, but any would be useful)

But cant compare firmware version between comand units because it differs on internal, region, etc..

2014 E350 Sedan (Sport)
I found another post which tells you how to get into the "secret" COMAND screens and see what version you're running. I just bought a used 2014 E350 and am researching how/if I can upgrade to ApplePlay. The one owner wasn't a big fan of taking it to the dealer very often. This site is awesome! There's a few $350-$400 versions of products out there, I was hoping it was easier than ripping apart half of my dashboard. I miss my WAZE!
