Stuck in Neutral

Stuck in Neutral
Here is a puzzle I can't find the answer to:
c230 2006 4door sedan
car turns on, no codes.
the shifter moves normal but the car acts like it's in neutral. let's say I put it in reverse or drive and the car sits like it's in neutral. The car doesn't go anywhere, it is stuck in neutral. I can put it in park.
I've checked the fuses, again, no codes.
Any ideas on narrowing down the cause? Anyone heard of this happening?
