Unfortunately I believe the dealer has to perform the update, and it isn't cheap. Your phone and a good data plan is a better Nav than the archaic Nav system in the car.

You can buy disks to do the upgrade yourself. It does take a looooooong time so you need to have a battery charger attached to your car or leave the engine running for two hours (seriously, that's how long it takes).
Official disks cost about £150. I bought disks from www.satnavdvd.co.uk which were about £30. They look genuine but I have my suspicions that they are not. You may or may not care. I don't.
I would say that the MB satnav sucks. I like the voice but the quality of the directions and the ease of use both leave a lot to be desired. I have given up using it and use my phone with Google Maps. It's much easier to use ("OK Google, directions to Leeds College of Music" and one tap vs playing around with the controls for five minutes) and the directions are far better. They also take into account current traffic conditions as well, something the MB satnav does not do.
