Please help - 2008 C350 Steering Feeling Roug

Hello all,

I am having an issue with my 2008 Mercedes C350. A couple months back I noticed that the steering feels much rougher then it normally does, meaning I have to use more force then normal or then I should. This is on both the highway and normal city driving.

I also notice when I first start the car, there is like a 1/8 play that seems to go away when driving. I know steering racks for these models are like $2800 so I really hope it's not that. I've already replaced the steering coupling and that did nothing. Any advice? Power steering possible?

Thanks,
Marco

Might be low on fluid. Just found my '09 almost bone dry (despite the local big MB dealer giving it the green light 2 weeks prior) and it had been making noise and groaning while cold for a few weeks now. Don't know if topping up the fluid helped as my steering lock failed at some point in the 12 hours before I topped the fluid up.

check the fluid level if you can or swing by the dealer and have them top it off if it needs it, for free.. Do you have any ESP warnings on in the cluster? If the fluid level is good you could have a failed pump if you dont see any fluid moving around when the car is idling, in the reservoir. Other than that, you could have a failed SPS valve on the steering rack for the speed sensitive steering.

Excessive wheel play, then goes away is a classic sign of a rack and pinion going bad .
