Winter tire size question
I changed my stock, 17" staggered set up for an AMG 18" staggered set up.
I want to use the stock 17" staggered set up with winter tires. Front is 225 45R 17, rears are 245 40R 17.
I can't find a matching set from various manufacturers. They either do one size and not both.
Is there a problem if I go to 245 45R 17 on the rears? That size is much easier to find that 245 40R 17.

I as well would go 225/45 17 all around. I think you will get better winter performance with a tire not as wide.

I have 30 years experience driving in Canadian winters. Staggered or not, will not make a difference to me. I can drive fine on ****ty all seasons since I know how to drive in the winter so a staggered winter set up won't make one difference over a non staggered winter set up.
I want to know if going to a 245 rear instead of a stock 240 will adversely affect anything.

You can use a 225/45x17 all around including rear on staggered wheel set up. Specs of the tires also fit 8.5" wide rear wheels as well.
Tire rack has Yokohama Ice Guars which are available in staggered setup for 17" wheels...that's what I run. Downside is they are noisy

Perfect and thanks. That is good news since I was unsure if the rear rims would be too wide or not for a 225 45R 17. Finding a proper staggered set up is near impossible since either one size is discontinued and the other size still available or each size is from different manufacturers. I looked at the Ice Guards up here but only available in a T speed rating. I am after a min of an H rated tire.

I may be stuck with the T rated Yokohamas then. Only tires I can find in the sizes I need front and rear that will fit the 17" wheels that came stock with my car.

225 on 8" LEFT. 225 on 8.5" wheel RIGHT

On the 8" rim, the sidewall sticks out more. On the 8.5" rim, because the tire has to go around a fatter rim, there's less of a sidewall protrusion and thus the rim lip can be more easily damaged. Would you agree? Any chance you have a photo of the sidewall of the 225 45 17 tire on the 8.5" rim?

I agree a little more stretched.....I was curious myself as I wouldn't want to stretched look like in the Stance scene. I also think it be pends on the tire and the "rim protector " molded into some tires. Some show it more than others. Personally for me, I like a square set up for winter tires to rotate and get more life out of em.

I would prefer that also but I don't want to buy new rims for the rear. I want to use the stock staggered set up to avoid buying two new rear rims or a set of 4 steel rims. I am not using my stock 17" setup so I want to turn them into Winter wheels.

If you want to go 225 all around, that's fine but also there is absolutely no problem driving with staggered setup during the winter.
This is my 6th winter with 225 front and 255 rear on 18" wheels and there is absolutely NO trouble. Believe me, I've been out on the road on numerous snowy days for 6 winters. Just buy good winter tires, stay away from deep snow and you are good. Narrow rear tires ruin the looks of the car and I wouldn't sacrifice that for 225 all around tire setup with mere benefits (if any at all).
