I did this over the weekend as well but I wired the power to the reverse light so that the camera is only powered when the car goes into reverse. You are probably seeing that black screen because the camera is not being powered. Essentially, you activated the reverse camera, so you are seeing that screen, but since the camera is not on, the screen is blank. It could be the wiring or a bad camera.

Here is the video I watched on the install. I think the guy was originally tapping the fuse but switched to the reverse light. I think tapping the fuse provides continuous power to the camera, even when not it use which will cause it to overheat.
