Might want to review your owner's manual. That is a battery jump point. The red cover slides over the tab for protection when not in use.

Tough crowd here. I confess, I didn't look in the FM. Not sure I would have realized what that photo on page 303 was trying to show me, though.

Hahaha. Years ago my battery went caput while my wife was driving it. She asked somebody to help her jump the car and I received a frantic call asking she cannot find the darn battery and the toyota driver does not know where to attach the cable. I laugh so hard as I kept on telling her to glance over the owner's manual so that if things happen she at least knows the basics of where things are. I told her over the phone MB made the car without a serviceable battery and we need to take out the entire engine to replace it and told her "see I told you to get the e-class as the battery on that car can be replaced easily". Long story short I told the guy where it was and how to jump the car but never I told the wife on how to do it as I want her to read the manual. When we bought the ML she asked the salesperson where the battery is and told the salesperson if it is under the engine we are not buying it LOL!
When I changed the battery I also changed my rims, tires, ordered a trunk spoiler and told my wife the extra expense was from the removal of the engine to access the battery. She knows I was joking but she cannot yell at me as she still does not know where the battery is.
