Check several tire size calculators online. I haven't with the sizes you've mentioned, but basically, if you go larger diameter (overall tire diameter), your acceleration and braking will be weaker. The going from a 45 to 55 will mean your tire will absorb more bumps in the road (instead of suspension). I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not since the suspension is designed to absorb bumps as it is with stock tires being low profile. Since you're doing narrower, you don't have to worry about scrubbing- which is the main problem when people get wider rims. I don't see any problems overall, as long as the bolt pattern works for your new rims.

I think you need to go go to 205/55/16 or the speedo will be wrong.

You sure you don't have your tire sizes mixed up? OEM staggered size for the W204 would be 225/45/17 for the front and 245/40/17 for the rear. You can definitely get away with 225/55/16, but ideally you'd want to go 225/50/16 to keep the diameter within .1" of the OEM setup. However, I know of several people that run 225/50/17 all around on the OEM rim, which is the same diameter as the 225/55/16 setup you're asking about. So to answer your question, yes it will work. Your speedometer may be off a tad but it won't be anything crazy.
