Dealer says "planetary gear" is broken - wants 1600$ + tax (Canadian)

The transfer case does have it's own drain and refill bolt..... but this is only used when you are performing work on the transfer case so that it doesn't start dry. It actually gets fed by the right side transmission oil cooler line. Once the transfer case fills up, it spills back into the pan. Maybe you can try draining the transfer case, filling it back up and performing a trans service.

I.e. changing transfer fluid not the same as changing transmission fluid?

What I am saying is that the transfer case does not have it's own fluid. The transfer case gets oil from the right side oil cooler line.... Once it fills up the fluid goes back in to the oil pan.
