Cannot get steering wheel back on column
Anyway, got it sorted and putting it all back together, but stuck at the final hurdle - I can't get the damned steering wheel back on.
It took me ages getting the bottom spline aligned and in fact I took the whole bottom post out to check that the universal joint did actually fit.
I followed https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...epair-diy.html to get that bit sorted.
There's a chance I've messed up the alignment of the shaft with the wheel but I was under the impression that the wheel wasn't keyed. No matter how I position the wheel, I cannot get it to line up on the splines.
In the interests of openness, I admit to giving the shaft a few clouts with the hammer when I was trying to fit the bottom spline so just in case I created some burs, I cleaned up the grooves with a file, still no joy.
The wheel is standard OEM.
Any ideas anyone?
I took the whole column out again, checked the splines and then used a bit of force on the bench to get the wheel on. Once it had overcome the initial splines, it was fine, comes on and off by hand now.
As suggested, probably mushroomed the top of the shat slightly but now it's fine.
Next issue is how to clear the SRS warning light...
