Bad ESL vs EIS Diagnosis without scanner

I believe my EIS went out and not the ESL but I'm not completely sure. It is inconvenient to tow to dealership and back to get diagnosed when I want to do the repair myself. When I put the key in the ignition the car does not recognize anything, it does not say remove key. When ESL is bad does it always say remove key or will it sometimes not recognize the key and have a blank dash? I never had any issues with the steering lock, never heard any sounds, everything worked perfect up until yesterday.

not a merc
When ESL fails the eis will seem dead too. 99% its your ESL and often no fautls are stored either. Sometimes you will get.. steering lock implausible signal. Sometimes controller in esl goes into locked state then the only fix is specialist tools to fix it
