Breather Cover Lower Bolts Removal, Oil Drip Pan DIY

For anyone attempting this job, I will tell you it's a pain in the ***.

It's a challenge to get clearance even with a small vice grips. Why Mercedes put torx bolts on is just insanity..

UPDATE: Got Bolts Off

Using a small vice grip, I used a T30 Bit. Positioned it as close to the handle as possible.

DO not buy crescent vice grips. Total garbage...

It barely gave me clearance. Success!

Problem No. 2 Getting the oil drip pan out. The extension is too long to clear.

I believe an E10 fits the bolt but I can't verify with anything online.

Not sure what extension tool I need. Anyone?

Hard for me to visualize but maybe try a swivel socket attachment? That way the extension can clear

PAIN IN THE ***, SMALL SPACE

I ended up using an e10 with a 1.5 extension which barely clears the oil drip pan. Extremely tight getting the 3/8 drive ratchet on.

Using the e10 is not an exact fit as there is a little bit of play. Not sure what size the actual bolt is.

I used a T30 bit with 4 inch vice grips for the bolts on the breather cap which is a ***** to get to.

NOTE: I am going to swap the Torx bolts out for E10 bolts as it's too easy to strip. Space is super tight.

Not really sure what the best tools are.

If someone can add their thoughts on making this job easier. Thanks!

It's not too bad of a job with the proper tools. I recommend you look into a catch can, it would T in the other side of the PCV system. Think of the drip pan as the "Fresh air supply" for the PCV system. The little PCV box on the driver's side head is where the oil accumulates and goes back in the intake. All you have to do is T in a catch can the hose going to that little box and you will be preventing that oil going through your engine every oil change. Mine fills up with about 200-300ml of oil after ever 3000-4000km so it's definitely worth the investment long term.

Q1. What tools do you use?

Q2. What catch can do you put in? Pic?

Random Question: Plastic Holder with Hose

While doing the PCV, I noticed this plastic holder with a thin hose.

Does anyone know what this does?
