First DIY Brake Job on 2014 C300 (a few questions...)
Great forum, my 2014 C300 has 103,000 km on it. Brake pads have been changed 3 times.
I am noticing alot of squeaks on the front end when driving and braking. However, no brake light is showing up on dash. Makes me think there is a problem with the brake pad sensor.
I will be performing this brake job myself. A couple of questions for you guys:
-Should I change the rotors at this time?
-Should I apply brake lube/paste on the brake pad ends?
-Should I purchase the pads and/or rotors direct from Mercedes dealership?
Any help is greatly appreciated! I have changed brake pads and rotors before, but not on a vehicle this new. So just want to do it right - also my wife mainly drives the car and I don't want to hear complaints.
Thanks!

- General rule you want to replace the rotors also. If you are hearing squeaks most likely your pads are eating away at the rotors so may see gouges or scratches on the rotors already. You may still be able to get away just replacing the pads if the scratches are very minor like hair line scratches and they are not gouges (definitely wanna replace them if they''re gouged). I've replaced only the pads before without any major issue but obviously the new pads will have less contact area with the rotor until the pads smooths out the hairline scratches eventually. But just to point out, you can get rotors at FCPeuro for about $60 so for that price it's just better to just replace them.
-I apply brake grease at the ends of the pads and no issue
-I prefer buying from the dealer but they are a bit more pricey.
Always replace hardware kit when you remove caliper. 2 pins 2 bushings. Takes 5 min. Advance or AutoZone has in stock for 25.00or less. Always grease pad backs and any part of caliper that touches metal pad. NOT on pad.
If the brakes are squeaky that doesnt necessarily mean they are low or need to be changed.
You can look at them behind the wheel and see the outer pad so get a sense how much pad is left. (inner pad is usually more worn than outer however.)
When it come to rotors two of the main concerns are thickness and trueness. If you’ve gone thru three sets of pads and not changed the rotors are probably toast. There is a min required thickness for rotors specific to each car/model. You can feel the outer lip of the rotor to generally see how much is “carved”.
FCP Euro is a good source, and Zimmerman rotors are basically equal to Mercedes branded. (And likely from the same factory/assembly line).
Brake pads are an endless set of options. In your case I’d just go with Mercedes branded. I dont know if the MB standard is semi-metallic or ceramic. They are a lot of differences, but Ceramics produce less dust but can squeak a bit in the morning when cold and dont have a nice pedal like semi-metalics. But any of the aftermarket options on FCP euro are good, they only offer good products and give you a lifetime warranty.
