key programming

I bought a car from a dealer 3 hours away. They ordered me a second key. It finally arrived. Now they are telling me I have to stop in to get the key programmed. I called the local dealer to see if they could do it and they want to charge me 1 hours labor to program the key. Is this something I can do myself? If not I'm gonna push the dealership to reimburse me to get it done locally since the other dealership is going to do it under the CPO warranty. .

The dealership is going to cover me for the cost of having the key programmed locally. Now I just sit back and wait for the key to arrive.

If the key was ordered from Mercedes Benz, is pre-programmed. This is true for all 98-2014 vehicles with fbs3 systems. In 2015 Mercedes started implementing the new FBS4 which works completely different. In your profile I see that you have listed a 2013..... which means your key should be ready to go once it arrives.

It’s nice to see they’re helping you out. I had an older 2008 CLK350 and my key randomly stopped working. I called a couple of dealers in Miami and every single one wanted $650-$700 for the key. They also wanted me to tow the car three hours to Miami to supposedly program the key once it arrived. As if the key wasn’t already factory programmed via the cars VIN. I ended up driving an hour and a half instead, paid $398 for the key, and had no need to tow the car to them.

I’m curious though why they would need to have the key programmed for you locally. Did they happen to give you any reason as to why it was necessary?

The dealership in NJ told me that they ordered the key when I picked up the car back in December. I traded the 2013 for a 2015 C class coupe. If my profile still lists the 2013, I will update it. Anyways...2 months later, I've been calling trying to find out where the key is. They finally called me and told me the key arrived, but it needed to be programmed to my car. They wanted me to drive down there to have it programmed. I pushed them to send me the key and have it programmed at the local dealership rather than have me waste a full day. I thought the keys were ordered for the VIN of the car and came programmed. All I know is that I will get it programmed locally and they will reimburse me.

What is the difference between the FBS3 & FBS4 system? The new car has keyless-go which is making me feel spoiled. It's making me want to install a bluetooth enabled door lock on my house so I can leave the key in my pocket...

My apologies I did not take a look at your profile. My understanding is that FBS4 keys come blank without being preprogrammed. FBS3 keys come programmed from factory using the car’s VIN. Which would answer my original question 😅

I have programmed up to 2014, but for cars up to 2014 you don't really need to goto the dealer they just want to make sure it works because sometimes the EIS data rolls and they want to make sure the key syncs, another thing because its a anti theft part they also want to make sure the car is actually present but all that is not necessary

Wasn’t aware of the possibility of the key not properly syncing so that I can understand. However every dealer I contacted required the owner to be present with a photo ID and registration to order the key. If you wanted to have someone else order it or even pick it up they required a signed and notarized letter from the owner providing authorization.

So I spoke with the dealership 2 weeks ago and they said they were going to send me the key. Well, 2 weeks later and I have not seen the key. I spoke with the dealership and come to find out Mercedes does not allow dealerships to mail keys, they are supposed to be picked up by the owner of the car to avoid the key getting into the wrong hands. They had to fight to get authorization to send it. Somehow, they managed to pull it off because the key is on its way to me today.

What a hassle. I am glad though that Mercedes has these measures in place so the keys are safely delivered to the owner.

I got the key and it works for opening the doors and in the ignition but does not work with the keyless-go system. I scheduled an appointment to have it programmed later this week. If it can arrive programed for the doors, why not keyless-go?
