Center Console/ Receiver Screen half white (faded)

Hey guys.

The center receiver on my c300 w204 is half White (see attached pictures). My local repair shop quoted $2,000 to replace this!!

Has anyone just done it themselves with used parts from eBay? Is there a receiver that actually fits from Best Buy that someone has used since they offer free installation? It’s very annoying to have a half working screen.

Thanks for the help.

Search eBay or Google the LCD screen and used units occasionally pop up. YouTube has videos on installing replacement..pretty easy when I did it. The attached link is helpful.

Did your screen look similar? I am worried that maybe its not a screen problem but the control module or something. Then ill be out $200 bucks for the LCD.

My screen went white/blank lower thirs, then I smelled burning insulation, it flickered all over and went black. The screen had a very thin gauge wire that went to thye LCD surround which had melted ,broke. Tried to repair but too fine a job for me. Take a sniff at the top left of the screen and I bet you'll smell insulation mildly roasted !!

Thanks Gamma, you are the man!

I am pretty bad at this stuff, but refuse to pay $2,000 lol. I am going to open it up and check out the situation. So the wire was replaced because it was basically attached to the new LCD right? So the new LCD fixed the wire issue, I am assuming I have the same problem.

I am thinking about buying this as well:
Amazon Amazon

This way I can listen to music and charge my phone at the same time. These new phones only have one port and so I can only charge or Aux. What do you do?

Check out the YouTube videos for how to remove the vent panel (remove those 2 small rubber stops and insert a coat hanger piece with a small hook and end x 2) and yank gently. That will access torx screws to remove radio LCD, motorized apparatus..two plug ins for assembly..the rt side one I believe powers the motor screen..unplug both, turn key/radio ON, and touch power plug to connector to open flap to "Service" position..about half open. You can now access the LCD plastic cover plate and 2 torx screws..the Aussie with the C300 YouTube video covers all this. If you got the LCD screen only you will have to remove the ribbon connector and other 2 small single wires..this plastic is brittle so very carefully pull out the ribbon connector ends (note which side the ribbon goes in the connector) The connector ends have a tiny protrusion you pull gently on..this releases the ribbon. Again go crazy checking out all the various videos to get a feel for this repair process.. BTW, I broke the tabs on the ribbon connector but a small dab of Superglue seemed to seals things solid. As far as an interface, I get along with Sirius alone.

Thank you Gamma!! This is so helpful. I was watching the Australian guys videos, haha. I think I will buy a screen on Amazon new, that way if it is not the solution, I can return it. I will buy the screen after I pull it out. Just to make sure I end up getting the right model unless all c300 w204s are the same. Mine is 2011. I will let you know how this goes.

Yep, that looks like the LCD...the rear is the same as is the part #. Where the 4 wires with 2 connectors enter the frame is where the melt down was. Good price BTW....

Thanks. I am going to take it out today and see if the wires are are melted. As of right now, I do not smell anything burning in the top left. I am thinking if the wires all look fine maybe it is not the LCD. That's usually my luck. Returning the new screen is kind of complicated since the parts seem to typically come from Europe or China.

Do you think its worth trying to replace it even if the wires are not burning/ melted? or is this indication of a different problem?

Pretty sure your screen failure description is most suggestive of the LCD failing. Another weak point is the wire ribbon connection where they describe wire disruptions. Takes a magnifying glass to really see those well. The perimeter of the LCD has this fragile glass capillary tubing also. I've got the 2 printed circuit boards from my old screen, albeit with the ribbon connectors' lock nibs broken (as I mentioned, a dab of superglue does the trick). You are welcome to them if the screen isn't the fix.
