Hello,
My car was brought to the dealership for no start no crank. Key turned fine and some of dash lit up. The service advisor has quoted me 4100 to replace ESL, EIS and a new key. She has not provided any real diagnostic report with a breakdown of parts/labor. She said there may be other repairs needed but will not know until the car is started. I pressed her for a report and via text she said this: performed drive auth test found steering lock failed. performed i/f lower kick panel and volt supply test. pin 2 and steering lock from front sam. 10.2 volt check fuse ok. pin 3 signal msg to the system from lock 0 volt. need to replace steering lock and eis switch and key.
I know nothing about cars and was hoping someone can comment on whether this is how you determine the esl eis needs to be replaced. Should there be error codes from star? Also, does anyone know of an indy shops in North NJ that can work on these issues.
Thanks so much. I appreciate your thoughts on this.

I wouldn't pay the dealer that much to get it repaired. You can have a local indy garage do it for you. I had my ESL replaced once by the dealer and it failed again. I just replaced it with an emulator and now I don't have to worry about that again. I think it is some guy that posts on Youtube that is NJ, not sure. He always works on Mercedes and you can try them, their channel is called Best Car Fixes. Wish I could help you more but don't know anyone in NJ. Good luck.
Find a locksmith and they will come out to you and do the repair.
I had an emulator put in by a locksmith. My ESL had not failed but I wanted to get that taken care of before it failed. It cost me $450.00 since it was really a 30 min job for the locksmith.
I asked the guy and he told me he replaces few W204s every week, if it fails in lock position he usually charges around $800.00
Based on pictures of this module internals, it is assembled using solderless-pins that get oxidized by condensation.
I bet the original EIS can be put back to work under 20mn without any programming, just a couple solders joints. Same thing's true for other priceless modules.
Nothing to lose fixing a bad module for free!

++++ EDITS 1: ++++ out...
it looks like my EIS module will get opened up sometime shortly: the "Ignition key" not the "steering lock".
++++ EDITS 2: ++++ nop...
I can not remove my EIS without dropping either my dashboard or my steering column. The geniuses added 2 solid brackets for the knee airbag right in the way.
If your car does not have that airbag then piece of cake! blocage galore
unsoldered pins good until 😜
