Transmission Fluid Replacement

Hey guys,

I am wanting to replace the transmission fluid & filter in the car. Typically I buy the Mercedes fluids from the dealer, I wanted to know if anyone has done a fluid and filter change with any of the kits from FCP Euro and if so, were you satisfied with the fluid provided?

I was looking at this kit to be exact:

Those brands are good ones so your probably fine. Have you done this before? Reason I ask is that Mercedes’ updated the pan design so the overflow tube is designed to go with that. Personally, I would only use OEM on this and maybe aftermarket bolts, OEM bolts are $5 a piece!!!

I have never actually done this on the car. The car seems to have a bit of vibration on acceleration in certain gears and the Adaptation Values showed the 2nd and 3rd gear range to have some issues. The car has 131K miles on it and the transmission fluid has never been changed. I figured that might resolve my issue hopefully. I might need to look at the valve body and see if there is any issues with O-rings there. I did call my Mercedes dealership and they wanted around $45-$50 a quart for the transmission fluid for my car. I thought that was a bit steep.

That price is theft. Here; https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mer...s-002989060309

at your mileage it’s risky changing the fluid the first time but you can change it. The shaking could be other things though.

Do you know if Pentosin oil is the same oil the Mercedes sells but without the Mercedes bottle and label?

that I don’t know, but aftermarket oils are usually designed to work with a range of different makes/models. They are not specific to our car, there is also 2 different fluids and our transmission is real sensitive. For a bit more money it’s worth it to me for the piece of mind.

Pentosin may or may not be what is in the Mercedes bottles.

What is important is:
Pentosin ATFs are approved on the Mercedes BeVo.
Pentosin 134 is approved on sheet 236.14 for vehicles with 722.9 transmission up to June 18, 2010 production date.
Pentosin 134 FE is approved on sheet 236.15 for vehicles with 722.9 transmission from June 21, 2010 forward.
The fluids are not cross compatible. You must get the correct one. 236.14 fluid is red. 236.15 fluid is blue.

For my C250 2013 sport, I used Pentosin from FCP, but I got the 5 liter+1 liter bottle. my car olny needed 6 liters. It's been almost 40k miles now since the fluid change and so far no issue. I am planning to do it again soon.

I used Fuchs Titan ATF 4134 from memory, the important thing is the oil spec for your transmission.

I went ahead with this kit from FCP Euro:

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mer...em-7229erlysk1

It seemed to resolve my problem. The fluid that came out was black/brown. I assume it had all 131K miles on it. This stuff fixed up the transmission back to 100% it feels like and the car drives great again. Thanks for the assistance and input guys.

How many qts did you need? How did you measure fluid temp?

I ended up using right around 8.5 Liters I believe. I drained the fluid and took the pan off of the transmission one evening. I let it sit and drain overnight and get as much fluid out as possible. The next morning I put everything back together and filled up the transmission with a pneumatic system. The fluid started going back in the car at 30c and with an Autel diagnostics device let the car warm up to 40c. At 40c I checked the fluid level in the pan by removing the fill mechanism but nothing draining out. So I filled it up a little bit more and checked again. Once I saw that fluid was draining back out then I knew it was full. A little bit more went into the transmission after just to be sure but it was a very small amount of fluid. After that I took it out for a gentle drive just to make sure that everything was solid. I still believe I have some dirt running around the transmission but this new filter should clean that up after a few thousand miles.

Glad you got it done. How's the acceleration vibration?

Thanks. Acceleration seems to be back to normal. I do not feel any vibration at all anymore. I guess I did not realize that the fluid could make that big of a different. (Although I should have)

Thanks for the feedback. Glad it's sorted out now. Did the fluid come out black? My 110K to 170K OCI still came out red so I was thinking going for at 80K OCI on this fluid charge.

Yeah, the fluid that came out for me was black/brown. It almost smelled like burned motor oil.

For next time or anyone else looking this up, I have a great maintenance thread that covers all of this:
