2010 Mercedez-Benz C250cgi
Question My car is acting strange after an oil change, what could be wrong?!

I have a 2010 Mercedes-Benz C250cgi that's clocked up only 75,000km. It's immaculate, and has been very well looked after and serviced all it's life.

I gave it an oil change yesterday using 5W-40 Penrite HPR5 oil, which is Mercedez-Benz approved and quite a popular and expensive oil here in New Zealand, and i also changed the oil filter while i was at it.

All seemed well, at least until i took it for a drive later that afternoon. After driving it for a good 20 minutes there was a strange noise coming from the engine, like a noise from a diesel tractor, similar to an old clattering engine that's struggling for life. The sound only lasted approx. 5 seconds but long enough to scare the **** out of me and so i promptly drove it straight home which was only 5 mins away.

Fast forward a day later (today), i decided to jack the car up and i took off the undercarriage plate protecting the oil sump, all looked good, no oil leaks and all the screws for the plate were re-installed correctly. I then lowered the car, checked the oil filter was installed correctly, i could see oil inside there, it looked ok. I then checked the oil level, it looked low! Bizarre... considering this car takes 5.4l of oil and i'd put over 5.6-5.7l in there! Anyway, I put more oil in, and in the end i would say there is now 5.9l in there! Surely it's too much?! But the dipstick says otherwise and is showing just below full... strange, but ok.

After completing the above process i then started the car so i could re-check the oil level after it had circulated around the engine. I left it idling for a few minutes, all seemed good, but then i decided to rev the car to 2k RPM to speed up the process. After hitting around the 2k RPM level the car then spluttered as if starving for air (or oil) and so i quickly turned the car off. I re-checked the oil level, it looked ok. I then started the car again, and the same thing happened. I no longer want to turn it on, just in case, the car didn't seem to like it.

What on earth could be wrong with it? The strangest thing in all of this is that there hasn't been a single error message or check engine light pop up on the dash, and i know these Euro's are sensitive!

Any ideas?! I need the car for work so need to sort it ASAP! Thanks!

Wrong oil filter installed perhaps?

Yeah it could be, and i must admit that i had my doubts about it being the correct one but it did fit ok so i figured it was all good. Are the symptoms of an incorrect oil filter typical of the ones my car seems to be having such as spluttering when the revs come on and a clattering noise from the engine?

Just had a look and you are right! I ordered and fitted a Mann HU514X filter from RockAuto.com, but it turns out i need the Mann HU514Y instead... the 'X' model is for the supercharged C Class, mine is the Turbo model, requiring a different oil filter, the 'Y' model! Somehow it fit, but it must be wrong just enough to be causing oil starvation?! This must be the issue right?... Surely!

Is there anywhere that i can purchase the Mann HU514Y filter? I live in New Zealand so it must be able to be shipped here.

If you need the car for daily use, is there a Mercedes dealer near you? I see that filter on Amazon and eBay as well.

Oh, yeah, you messed up. The X and Y look nothing alike. What did the old filter look like?

I would not drive the car until you get the right filter in place. More than engine damage, you could destroy the turbo with oil starvation.

Agreed, do not turn that engine on until you have the appropriate filter in place.

Can search the mann website for local sellers.

https://www.mann-filter.com/en/servi...er-finder.html

There must be an auto parts store, or mercedes dealer you can contact.

Can look up the equivalant filters to see if theres anything else around you local.

The correct filter is definitely needed. I always bought the filter for my C250 from the dealer website using my VIN for just that reason - somehow the aftermarket suppliers thought the X&Y were interchangeable.

However, the noise you described concerns me otherwise. It could be a coincidence that it happened after an oil change.

Those are EXACTLY the symptoms I experienced when my camshaft adjuster began to fail on my M271 EVO engine. It happened suddenly at about 75,000 miles. For the first few days there was no CEL. Then the CEL came on intermittently for maybe a week. Then the CEL stayed on. You can search the W204 Forum for C250 or M271 camshaft adjusters or phasers. I was able to drive mine for a couple of weeks without catastrophic failure. I don’t drive very hard and probably took it easier because of the problem. Others were not so lucky and destroyed their engines.

If changing to the correct filter doesn’t solve the noise problem, get it to a service center soon.
