Gear Lock Cable and Socket
Hi folks
I have something i wonder so much.
My friend has a w204 18.cgi
He hears a sound from console and open shifting box place and he sees a coin. Take it out and sounds disappears.
He sent me a photo
He said that when he opened console that cable was unplugged.and asked what this cable work for?
As i know this is gear shifting lock cable and it connected to ignition lock.
And its mission is to lock changing gears while car ignition is off.
But he said before plugging this cable i could not change gears while car is off.
If it is so, why is cable out there?
Is there any additional precaution to prevent changing gear while ignition is off (for example software wise or someting else?)
Looking forward to hearing ur answers folks.
Thank you

I never had mine apart so not sure exactly how it works. As you said I know it does connect up to the ignition lock. I thought it needs to be engaged to unlock the shifter, I'm surprise the car was able to be driven with the cable disconnected.
Are you saying he was able to drive around with the cable unplugged?
I dont know if there is another lock on the shifter other than that cable. Wonder if there is a small electric motor in the shifter somewhere that disengages with the power on?
