P0016 P0017 balance shaft and timing chain.
Hello,
i have a w204 / m272 C300 2008 - 184,000miles.
getting P0016 and P0017 codes; my VIN falls outside the problematic VINS with balance shaft issues.
reading other threads the issue can be due to a balance shaft worn issue or a stretched chain issue:
1. is there a test or way to check if its a stretched timing chain issue vs a balance shaft issue - i know theres alot of posts about o-scoping the 4 cam sensors to find out if there is a timing issue - but is there a way
with a scope to determine if the timing issue is due to a balance shaft or stretched chain?
2. can the timing chain be replaced on an m272 w/o pulling engine if so any videos of good instructions on how to do this w/o pulling the m272 ?
thanks Pete

@pchan Before you go throwing parts at it, do some research. There is many videos in YT where you can see how to check if you have a balance shaft issue or if the mechanical timing is off. I have yet to see an engine outside of the serial number range that has the failure. Once common thing I have seen is oil sludge.

was able to roll in new chain + tensioner following all these instructions - also replaced both the cam gears
old chain was about 0.5" longer then new chain - both p0016 and p0017 are now gone and cam markings at 305 degrees line up perfectly on all 4 cam ( right and left side ) windows.
thanks for all the good info.
