Hi everyone, I've got a 2012 C300 4matic and it just came back from my mechanic with the note that I need a torque converter. The symptoms are a dancing tach and a sense of surging or delayed acceleration when driving. Not extreme but annoying. I was quoted $4,000 CAD which is a lot on a 12 year old car that's pretty high mileage. I just spent $3000 on it getting an oil leak repaired and some sort of flap replaced in the intake manifold. LOL you can probably tell I'm not a mechanic. I was told that I could probably drive the car for some time without issue but I'm not as convinced. I'm worried about the TC suddenly giving out leaving me stranded somewhere or causing other damage. I don't know if that's a serious concern or not, like I said, I'm not a mechanic.

I'm wondering if there are other options for torque converters beside OEM. My mechanic recommended I stay away from a used one, which I agree with but there must be other options. Are rebuilt TC's a thing? I've also heard that some parts are identical from one company to another but you pay a premium for a "luxury brand" name.

I'm open to any suggestions. Many thanks in advance!

How many miles and has the transmission fluid ever been replaced? Before we start replacing TCs, let make sure maintenance is caught up first, then validate the diagnosis second. Plugs, fluid changes, vacuum leaks, etc. all up to date?
