HeatAC fan failing intermittently

All climate control lights and dials light up but sometimes the fan works and sometimes not. When it is on there’s a clicking noise that was not there before. Any thoughts?

I would inspect the blower. Go in the engine bay and remove the plastic box above the battery so you can see the fan. Spin it, see how it spins. Do not have the key in the ignition when sticking your fingers in there.

if the fan spins fine then start the car and put the heat on high, then see what the fan does.

May be a failing blower motor resistor.

I see they call it "Blower Regulator". Part 100. if it is faulty make sure to check the part# of the one installed in the car before replacing.

I took the battery cover off and spun the fan a few times. I started the car and turned the heat up and looked at the fan and it was not spinning. I reached in and spun it and it kept spinning. I got in the car and could feel air coming out of the vents. I went out to look at the fan again and this little lid closed on top of it. Turned car off and looked and the lid had risen. Started car again and fan was not turning and then the lid popped down again denying me access to the fan. Inside the car, the fan was not working.

Most likely what @TimC300 said.
It sounds like the blower motor might be the issue. I replaced mine about two years ago on my 2013 C250. To remove it, I had to loosen the glove compartment and push it forward by about half an inch to allow enough room to rotate the motor out of the base clamps.

That lid does open and close on its own. i've seen it operating on its own when first unlocking the car, ive had that box off for various reasons like testing the battery and it will open and close without the key in the ignition. Probably self testing. Not sure why it closes with the car running, maybe defrost or to recirculate the air, maybe get it hotter faster? no idea.

Did you have the fan set to full speed? Im not sure on Mercedes but i had a Jeep before that had a faulty resistor/regulator. The symptoms were the fan would only work on high, it would not work in any of the lower settings.

But since you say the fan wasnt moving initially but moved after you gave it a push leads me to think maybe the fan is faulty, or more specific the brushes in the fan. Im not sure how to test it though, wouldnt want you just replacing things without knowing exactly what is wrong.
