Bulb out and ILS inoperative

New here so please be gentle with me i am old lol.
2013 C250 amg diesel
Got a message up saying ns low beam bulb out then a second one saying ILS inoperative.
Changed the bulb (D1S) still nothing same messages come up.
Changed the ballast but i admit it was the cheapest one i could find don't know why i bought that one.
I have now got the proper one but not got it fitted yet (can't do it myself disabled).
Do you think this is the problem or could it be the other module under the headlight.
Thanks for any help.

I just have regular halogen headlights no ILS so I dont have much experience with your issue.

I think with the Xenon headlights you have the bulb/ignitor, the ballast, then another control unit. And then with the ILS it works with a level sensor mounted somewhere near the rear drivers wheel well.

I would scan the car with a Mercedes specific OBD scanner to check for any fault codes. Without a scanner you can always try testing all the harnesses with a multimeter which would require the correct wiring diagram to go off of.

Or you can just go ahead and swap things around. i would have swapped the bulbs first to check that way. I looked at the parts diagrams and it appears the components for the Left and Right are the same so they can be swapped. Swap out one thing at a time.

Most definitely!

@AlanMW7TTA
ILS even on W204 is quite complex. Discuss with the shop that they are using scanned diagnostic codes as the basis for their recommendation. There are sensors and a controller in that system. Get them to explain what they are planning and their rationale so that this expensive repair can be done correctly the first time.

Looks like removing the forward section of the wheel well liner will give access to the headlight control units. Im assuming the unit directly below the low beam bulb is the lamp control unit or the "ballast". In the manual it mentions transferring data over to the new unit. i cant find the reason why though, what it does.

I have a 2013 C250 M271 with factory ILS. I am not having issues yet but I will follow this thread.
Looks like a simple ballast replacement is too complicated. I wonder if the data is tied to the VIN to unwarrant a pre-owned ballast.
