Is a 120W LED Headlight Safe for a Mercedes C200 (2009)?

Hey everyone,

I have a 2009 Mercedes C200, and I’m looking to upgrade my headlights to LED. I found two options on Amazon:
  1. 120W / 24,000LM
  2. 90W / 18,000LM
I wanted to ask is it actually safe to install a 120W LED headlight in my car? Or is this just a marketing gimmick? I’ve read that some LED headlight wattage claims are exaggerated, and I don’t want to risk overheating or electrical issues.

Would the 90W be a better option, or are both unrealistic numbers?

Here are the links to both products:
[Link 1 (120W / 24,000LM)] https://amzn.eu/d/30fJL9J
[Link 2 (90W / 18,000LM)] https://amzn.eu/d/30fJL9J

Would appreciate any insights from those who have experience with LED headlight upgrades. Thanks!

Good question if barbeque power-rated :-) LEDs can be installed.

For the traditionl halogen bulbs it was quite common for people to upgrade from 55 w to 100 w. That seemed to work, and is then corresponding to an increase of about 100% in power consumption.

Today's electricaö systems are probbly less overbuilt. Do you mean actual wattage or "equivalent" wattage for equal lumen like xenons or halogens? Seems really high for LEDs actual draw.

Halogens as mentioned consune 55 w, Xenons in our c-classes 35 watt. I can only presume LEDs draw less than 35 w as standard each.

Xenons have a ballast which may be la lmiting factor.

Perhaps others can chime in on LED upgrades.

I changed my two car halogen bulbs to LEDs. It's been a while but I remember when I bench tested them, LED draw about 5A at 12V, so 60 watts. They are much brighter than the factory halogens.
120W is doubled in power so double the current. To me it is very dangerous, the wires could get very warm if not burnt especially in hot summer.

If Amazon has free return for those LEDs, get them and test how much current they draw. Then you decide to keep or return them. I'd like to be on the safe side, and 120W is really not necessary for me.
I posted my LED light beam a while back, https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...t-working.html

Thanks for the insight! Yeah, I’m starting to think the 120W claim is a marketing gimmick it’s probably 60W per bulb, adding up to 120W total. But I’m still not sure if 60W per bulb is too much or if that’s within a normal range for LED headlights.

Would you say 60W per bulb is safe, or is that still pushing it? I don’t want to risk overheating the wiring, especially in the summer and me living in Dubai summer for us feels like hell

60W per bulb is safe, I remember a typical bulb is 55W. By looking at the heat sink size in your attached picture, it might be true that each bulb is 120W, way too much power.
