Help Needed - White Smoke and Strong Fuel Smell on My 2009 Mercedes C220 CDI W204
I’m really struggling with an issue on my 2009 Mercedes C220 CDI (W204). Before I changed the diesel particulate filter (DPF) with an aftermarket one about 10,000 km ago, I already had some white smoke and strong fuel smells. Since installing the aftermarket DPF, these odors and smoke have become much more noticeable, and I can clearly see strong diesel vapor coming out of the exhaust.
The smoke and strong fuel smell mostly occur at idle and low engine speeds, not only when stationary. The diesel smell is so strong that other road users have complained about it. Sometimes, the smoke is quite intense, especially in city centers, which now makes it difficult for me to drive around properly.
I recently had the intake manifold replaced, and I know the injector cover is also defective — I plan to have it changed soon, but I’m not even sure that will solve the problem. My mechanic confirmed there are no error codes and sensor readings are normal. The car also passed its recent emissions test perfectly, so the DPF seems to be working fine in terms of pollution control.
I’m confused about the cause of these symptoms. Could the aftermarket DPF be causing or amplifying the issue, even though the emissions test is fine? Or is there something else I should be looking into?
I’m spending quite a bit of money already and feel a bit lost on what to do next.
Any advice or shared experiences would be really appreciated. I’m open to suggestions on what to check next or how to troubleshoot this.
Thanks a lot!
