W204 Electrical Faults : No Indicators Intermittent Start No Crank Fog Lamps etc
This is an information post only and for educational purposes.
I recently got a very cheap Mercedes Benz C200 Kompressor for $2000 and it had intermittent issues after I charged the battery ( it was sitting for 8-9 months outdoors).
Issues noticed:
- No Crank No Start
- Fog lamps and High beam sign on the dash
- High Beam doesn't engage
- Indicators not working
- OBD no comms
- Rear SAM no comms
If you are going to ask ChatGPT or any one , they will say "Front SAM". In many cases that may be true if there has been water damage to the unit,
Primary reason for that water damage is driver side wiper has a hole in the plastic trim (overtime) that drips the water onto SAM module.
If Sam module is okay you also need to remember there is a Foam that sits between body and SAM module. That Foam will soak the water and routes it to driver side and in some cases to passenger sides. Overtime the floor gets wet and so do the CAN Connectors on both side.
Passenger side CAN connectors :
- TCM > Signal won't be sent to the car if its in [P]RND - Hence no start because it doesn't know the car is in P or another selection ( P has to be highlighted for the car to start)
Driver side CAN Connectors :
- Indicator Stalk options (Washer, Wiper, Indicators)
- OBD Scanner port CAN Connectors
- Fog Lamp, High Beam ON signs Connector (3 Pin)
Solution:
- Change all the CAN connectors on both Sides and clean the pins
- Inspect the SAM unit in the front (if any water use ISO Propyl Alcohol)
Car should start straight away after you reconnect the battery.
Important:
Remove the battery to disconnect SAM.
When SAM is connected, please put it back in its place or else it can be damaged by Wiper Motor ( like in my case after I fixed everything I broke SAM unit

)
