Car Play delayed?

Looks like Volvo and MB are delaying Car Play to 2015. I hope it's something that can be added on later.

Yep, the car play system can be retrofitted to older Mercedes, but i think you have to have the navigation package already installed, not sure about this, but someone did mention it in the forum.

I'm guessing if you can install Drive Kit Plus (2013+) you can install carplay whenever it becomes available.

The delay isn't new news, the AMG guys confirmed this a couple of months ago in the PL.

Doesn't having the navigation package defeat the purpose? Since the idea is to use your phone for nav... sounds like just a gimmick IMO

You don't need to get factory nav to get carplay based on what I was told in NY by the Apple/Mercedes people demoing the system. If you have nav, you'll just have 2 different nav systems.

It's not a gimmick, your nav gets out of date quickly, while your phone's nav is always updated and downloaded live off the internet.

I think at the moment it is somewhat of a gimmick. Car play is just showing the phone screen on the car screen and also providing gps info the the phone. It's great to not have to look down at your phone but besides that not that amazing (yes I know it's a special interface).

That said it could evolve into something very good. Texts, phone calls shown in the HUD, car specific apps etc but in order for this to work well there need to be lots of things the apps can access in the car.

Weather that access is possible with the current setup is unlikely. Car play will probably be amazing in a few generations time tho.

In any case it is still useful to have since it should cost nothing

Btw I develop apps, and the car play API list (what function sip you can access in the cars) is miserably small and inconsistent between car brands.
