multimedia vs No multimedia pcg / Sport vs Luxury
Also, as someone who has always lusted for an S class, but who lacks the budget to afford one, I viewed the new "baby S" as an opportunity to get reasonably close, and believe the luxury package gets me closer.
I have no interest in sportiness, driving it on a track, or even driving aggressively. Consequently, 17" wheels, even if a bit "frumpy" (which I'll admit), are a decided advantage given that I am principally interested in a soft ride that soaks up road imperfections in stride. Airmatic should help in that regard as well.
I completely understand that my needs and wants likely place me in a minority of potential buyers. I'm just glad that Mercedes is willing to make a product that can satisfy both.
Re: the safety thing mentioned elsewhere above. Yes, handling a phone is always dumb and unsafe in the car, but like I said, especially with screens propped up on dashs like they're getting, propping your phone next to it shouldn't be any less safe at all. You have to put your phone somewhere and frankly that's probably the safest place if you're gonna touch it.
Re: Sport vs Luxury. The "Sport" look to me has been getting so played out as MB used to designate it for sportier and more specialty coupe models. It's the corporate look now. The luxury grille and hood star are that stately image that gave Mercedes sedans their character. Nowadays the radiator grill is an increasingly exclusive look within the brand as even the E gets the Star grill in its facelifted awkward and mashed up implementation. The S is really the only common time you'll see that look now (on newer cars) which makes it extra exclusive as time goes on.
