W205 C-Class reliability - better info

I wanted more up-to-date car reliability information that made the differences between cars clearer. So a few years ago I started getting people together to make this possible. TrueDelta now updates actual repair frequencies, not just dots, four times a year, to report on new cars sooner then track them closely as they age.

With nearly 800 owners signed up, we've been providing stats for previous generations of the C-Class for a while now. I'd like to do the same with the C205--just a matter of how soon enough owners get involved.

Participants report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, following the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, participants receive full access to all results, not just those for the C-Class, for free. Once we have them I'll share results for the C205 in this thread after each update.

Wait for a year that will give you a better idea. I wouldn't be surprised if the first year reliability is pretty bad since this a completely new car that shares very little if anything with its predecessor. After the first 2 years it should improve quite a bit. The previous w204 was actually quite good.

Maybe, maybe not. The 2008 C-Class and 2010 E-Class actually had pretty good first years. (I see you have a 2015 MDX. That vehicle has had a poor first year, but if the past is any guide the 2015s will be much better.)

To avoid potential sources of bias, this survey works differently than most--it collects data going forward, and only problems that appear after someone joins count. So it is best to get cars started when they're new.

Ive gotten their surveys before. Quite detailed.

The MDX didn't do to bad for its first year. The CR survey showed avg reliability, not up to Honda standards but not bad at all for a new car. The only issue we have had with ours was a flooded taillight and desalination of the grills trim

That counts as troublesome by current standards, since the average is less than one repair for every three cars in the first year.

By the same token, though, worse than average certainly isn't the same thing as bad. Two minor repairs, no big deal. I try to make this clear by posting the actual repair frequencies, not just dots. CR's black dots tend to make cars seem far more troublesome than they actually are.

Absolutely right.
IMO if the car starts brakes and drives and doesn't leave me stranded I'm not too worried. If it fails to deliver me where I need to go, then we have a problem. That's why I hate the no spare thing. Its a rare occurrence but if there is anything I hate with a passion is being stranded.

Ten now signed up. A good start, but more needed to provide decent stats.

We might have an initial stat in May, but it's going to be tight. Even a couple more participants could make the difference between having a stat and not having one.

We're not going to quite have that stat. We received enough responses (barely), but many were from people who'd only had the car a month or two (surprise, these being 2015s).

With 21 cars currently enrolled, we're almost certain to have a stat with the following update, in August. For this stat to be usefully precise, though, we're going to need at least 25 participants.

So, if you haven't yet joined, I hope you'll consider it.

Our reliability stats for the C-Class now cover the year ending June 30, 2015. (Others are over a year behind.) Repair trips per 100 cars:

2015 C-Class: 73, high, small sample size

Looking forward to having more participants in future rounds, so we can provide more precise stats.

Thanks!

We'll have an updated stat next month based on quite a bit more data. If more owners keep joining, we'll have even more precise stats in future updates.

We've updated our reliability stats for the C-Class to include owner experiences through September 30, 2015. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2015 C-Class: 58, high

Decent sample size this time, and some improvement. More participants => more precise stats.

For the details, including repair descriptions, and to sign up to help (we especially need more 2016s):

I'm having a colonoscopy next week, so maybe I could make a "Driving My Petrol C Class to My Colonoscopy" video. Wouldn't that be enlightening?

Crucial? Hmmm..........paying my bills? Crucial. Feeding my cats? Crucial. Putting gas in my car, before it is empty? Crucial.

Seeing you post your video 400 times. NOT CRUCIAL.

Carry on.......or actually, please don't!

We've updated our reliability stats for the C-Class to include owner experiences through September 30, 2015. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2015 C-Class: 58, high, partly due to multiple reports of problems with the LEDs in the doors

Interesting web site. Here is another view. It's Consumer Reports reliability estimates for 2016 MB sedans vs all other cars:

C-Class: Reliability is 83% worse than average

E-Class: Reliability is 6% BETTER than average

S-Class: Reliability is 71% worse than average

We've updated our reliability stats for the C-Class to include owner experiences through the end of 2015, about eight months ahead of other sources. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year--lower is better:

2015 C-Class: 65, high

For the repairs behind these stats, reliability information on other models, and to sign up to help improve this information--we especially need 2016s:
