This doesn't help those of us considering the 2015 C-class in the near term, but the dirty little secret of the industry is the fact that the same supplier (Harman) provides the NAV/Audio system (software & hardware) for Audi/Porsche/VW, Mercedes, BMW, and many others. The difference in the user interface is a customized "skin" and control interface specified by each manufacturer.
There will be a widespread introduction of CarPlay for 2016 models but not surprisingly both Apple and most car manufacturers are leaving the specifics quiet lest 2015 sales suffer. But....VW/Audi have already broken radio silence and confirmed widespread CarPlay availability for 2016. And if Harmon is ready to provide the upgraded system to VW, then one can presume that their other customers will have the same opportunity.
Not surprisingly, once the components are in place to permit the phone's video hardware to drive the NAV screen, the systems will also be compatible with other major mobile operating systems (Android) as the auto manufactures don't want to be "locked" into a single ecosystem.

Is there any way to get navigation from mobile phone (IPhone/Android) to the screen of the car?
@mihaelb - any more info on how to use microUSB->hdmi with Android to do that? (or what needs to be added?)

I don't understand why they wouldn't implement Carplay without the multimedia package. Seems like it would be most beneficial to those without Navigation to be able to see the maps on the car's screen.

Not surpisingly, once the components are in place to permit the phone's video hardware to drive the NAV screen, the systems will also be compatible with other major mobile operating systems (Android) as the auto manufactures don't want to be "locked" into a single ecosystem.

Harman does not make Comand for Mercedes, Bosch does.
Besides Audi can say they will have CarPlay for 2016 it means nothing, Mercedes insisted C-Class would have it 8 months ago and it is still vaporware.

VW meant to be launching their 2016 model golf at the end of next month, will be good to see how well it all works. Waze are launching an app on android auto, i guess that will go on carplay as well. Would be a useful one that.

There are only a handful of apps that will get support for CarPlay, wake is not one of them. CarPlay does not just mirror your mobile screen onto the car.

Actually, one mistake and I'll cop to it. Will you?
It can be that simple for a very limited integration, but CarPlay also can do the full UI as displayed on the car's nav screen and the iPhone absolutely does the rendering for apps with large graphic requirements (example: Maps).
This concept has been central to the whole thing since day one and one of the sticking points has been wireless connectivity. Note that one of the big features of the recent iOS 8.3 update is the introduction of wireless CarPlay. Could this be the feature that the auto companies have been waiting for?
And to answer your question, screen mirroring can easily be transmitted wirelessly and has long been integrated into iOS (AirPlay). Not saying that this is how Apple is doing the wireless connection but the technology is established and seems like an obvious solution to build from.
In short: one of the largest consumer benefits of CarPlay (and the competing equivalents) is the ability to update the mobile device instead of the hardware in the car.
Yup, my bad. I simply looked at a list of Harmon customers and incorrectly inferred they did Command.

Harman Becker is the current supplier for COMAND and Mitsubishi Electronic is for Audio 20 in 205. In fact Mercedes (not counting Smart) has not used a Bosch system since COMAND 2.0(not NTG2/MCS2) which was in the pre facelift 220.

The most expedient way to get CarPlay right now is via a third party receiver... Alpine, Pioneer, etc, have actual products available. Downside is they are probably not going to integrate with the in car controls.

Then of course there is the whole "I ripped the specialized factory setup out of my $50K car to put a cheap Pioneer deck in and lost all of the factory integration" angle... which I would imagine 99.9% consider a deal breaker.
