Doesn't the brightness turn down either in settings or with the gauge cluster brightness toggle??

Yes it does. In the settings. It also has an automatic dimming mode.
I think that's what the little hole in the bottom centre is for. A light sensor.

Car>Vehicle>System Settings>Display>Brightness
It's possible to fine-tune the brightness scale under that menu.
