Creaking wagon

Anyone else's estate/wagon creaky and groan? Seems like whenever I drive around something that involves sharp changes of direction and ramps, like a parking garage, there's loads of creaking and groaning from the back of the car. I suspect the car is twisting and the seats and load cover are moving.

Even does it over bumpy roads, which in the UK, makes for a pretty noisy drive.

None here.

In fact my experience is the opposite. The car feels very stiff and has a remarkable quiet cabin, even on rough and gravel roads.

Mine does this a little, intermittently. Certainly nothing major and I don't notice it until I'm parking on a ramp or whatever. I suspect its the rear seats as on the odd occasion when I've pressed against the rear seat backs they creaked a little. Its probably something to do with the seat hinges or latches needing a little lubricant. The car feels perfect in all other ways. Its a long car and there's bound to be some minor twist in the chassis, especially with the pano sunroof which will weaken the chassis a little.

I've told the dealer but my experience with dealers is that while they solve one thing, they create another issue, taking everything apart etc.

So I'm waiting for better weather when I'll have someone in the car and help pin down where its coming from then apply lubricant.

I'm determined that any minor gripes (and this is minor) with this car I'm going to solve myself as my experience with the last car, taking it in for every little thing, means you end up with a car that rattles even more in the years to come.

It does seem to have gotten worse. I've had the car for 2.5 months now, and it's done 3000 miles.

I guess it could also be the pano roof creaking.

As it's got to go back again about the comms, I'll get them to see if there's anything that needs greasing.

If some have it and some don't its probably related to the spec of the car or a build date/change. I wouldn't worry, it's likely a minor tweak and the more people that report it the easier it will be to deal with at the stealers. Things like this seem worse because the car is so quiet otherwise.

For now, stick on some tunes and just remember to mention it to the stealers if you want them to sort it.

Oh one final note though...

If the dealer does sort it for you, ask them what they did and pop it on here would you, it might help myself and others facing the same noise.

If I find it first, I'll let you know also.

Very unlikely. There have been no reports of any noises, mechanical or wind related, attributed to the roof.

My guess is that some panel or seat part is rubbing as the car body flexes.

I've noticed the occasional noise from the rear seats but as I've got child seats in there most of the time, I've assumed that's been the source.

Wind noise from driver's door is a much bigger issue for me personally.

With regards a constant groaning noise, that normally comes from the occupant of the front passenger seat

Having just done a long run today I agree the incredibly annoying noise from the passenger seat is by far the worst thing. Sadly even MB can't help me there

The odd creak from the back somewhere is the only thing I can report, thankfully no wind noise etc

I am hearing creaking from the front right hand side spring/shock absorber. Only after the car is warm/driven for a while for some reason. By the time I get to work (or home in the evening), evry bump or turn I make is creaky. Especially noticeable going over speed bumps.

It is happening in my S205 as well. After 2 weeks of investigating on my part, I have pinpointed the creaking is coming from the folding rear seats on mine. When I drive over a speed bump or making a turn...etc, the stress in the chassis is making the seats creaks. I am guessing it is the seat frame....

will bring my car to the dealer next week. Hope they can fix it

Doesn't have to a be a quality issue. In general, with stiffer suspension and/or lower profile tires, expect more creaks from interior panels etc.

I've had several cars in the past which only started creaking after i installed big alloys or lowered suspension

I did get the odd creak at low speed over pot hole and curbs etc. turned out to be the luggage cover I think.

I narrowed this today, to the clamp that holds the two part seat in place.

I put a smear of general purpose grease on both the seat clamp and the part on the car it clicks on to.

Noise gone.. So far.

I can confirm the creaking has gone for me. Just for you and anyone else this might help, please see the two areas I placed a thin smear of grease (and I mean really thin so there's hardly any on to get on clothes if the seats are folded etc but clearly enough to make the surfaces move a touch without noise).

Thanks for that. I'll lube it up (fnarr) before I head to the station and it's multi-story carpark tomorrow and see if that sorts it. I'll do the catches for the load cover as well, as I've had that out a few times.

On a side note, it's a neat trick how the load cover can slot into the back of the seats when they're down so you can attach the luggage net to the roof to keep a load from coming into the front cabin.

Hopefully this will sort it for you and anyone else. I've been tootling around in total silence today.

If we're talking neat tricks, more impressive to me was when lowering the back seats the front ones moved forward on their own to enhance clearance and load volume.

Very cool.

Ha! That one caught me out the first time. Dropped the seats and filled up the back to go to the tip. Toddle round the front and couldn't get into the car, I'm well over 6 foot and the seat is normally a long way back and as low as it'll go. Spent ages trying to figure it out :-)

Awesome, that's sorted it! A little grease on the seat and load cover catches and noise seems to have gone.

Never ever needed to do that on a car before, mind.

I'm the closest you'll find to an expert on noise sorting because my BMW z4 has been a noise fest continually for years. Every month a new rattle or creak to find.

That's a convertible tho... With lots more moving parts.

Brilliant, glad I could help. Looking at the mechanism it seems there's a little hard plastic/rubber on the seat lock and I think its that rubbing against the metal loop on the car that caused the noise. Its possible a change in supplier or build step has meant no greasing or a material change causing the noise. Even environment. In any event hopefully thats that sorted with just the tiniest amount of grease. In fact you could probably wipe it clean now and it would still be ok, to ensure no grease gets onto your clothes if you ever drop the seats.
