How to remove overhead console?

The overhead console, with the lights in it, sos button, glasses holder etc. is it removable easily? Perhaps with trim tools? Mine makes a 'brr' sound over rough ground, like a wire tapping on something rapidly (its not glasses or the pivoting glasses door, its definitely something above the unit itself). Its not major but if the console can be removed so I can pad/reroute whatever may be making the noise then I'd like to do it. I'm loathe to get dealers to do such things as they usually create more noises than they solve in the long run. It only does it perhaps once a week when I hit something jarring (which I do my best to avoid) so its not major and I can live with it if I have to.

Very simple,

Insert a credit card between the console and the head liner, just above the buttons, push it in to relase the locking tabs and fold the console gently downwards.

Thanks. Despite losing light here now I went out to try that. I put two credit cards between the lining and the console (side by side along the full width of the console as I could see 4/5 plastic tabs (buttons end) and you can hear clicks as presumably catches disengage but no matter what I couldn't get the console to then swing down. I didn't want to pull too hard. I'll try again when I've more daylight.

There are two tabs located in the very middle of the console, they are about the width of a credit card, approximately 50mm.s

Ah, I was looking along the width of the console, above the row of buttons between the buttons and the lining, there seemed to be 4/5 small tabs that clicked when I placed the credit card in there. So the tabs are actually on the left/right of the upper console towards the buttons end? Is that in addition to the ones I thought I saw along the top or are there simply two tabs , one either side?

I've drawn red arrows into the below pic, which is where I'd inserted the credit cards and it didn't budge. Were you referring to this area or the area where I've put green arrows?

Went out and tried it on our demo S205 as it was a while ago I removed one,

Insert the credit card in the centre straight upwards towards the roof, this will free the two retaining tabs.
Then you have to push the entire unit forward towards the windsheild to unhook the outer plastic tabs, I snapped a couple of pics:

Here you can see the centre and outer tabs:

A picture of the recess, you can see the clamps holding the console

Forgot to mention that you need to push the entire unit forwards, sorry about that.

That's very much appreciated, thank you. I'll try this later when I'm home. Given the depth of the console, I'm now wondering if the brr/buzz is from within it rather than above it. If the former, its dealer time to replace it or whatever. I'm hoping its just a wire above it that needs re-routing.

Well god knows what I'm doing wrong. I can put the card in as you mention, width wise, about half the length of the card. I assume this is correct as it goes up much further than before in the slot shown in the console on your photo. But, no matter what I do, I cannot then slide the console forwards, it won't budge. I don't want to heave on the thing in case I break something. I realise this is a lot to ask but is there any chance you can video the removal, I know its a faff about for you but this would be really helpful to know exactly how this is removed, there's clearly a knack that you have, that I don't!

I'll see what I can do, but there is another trick you could try, look at the locking mechanism in my upper picture, if you press the centre tabs towards the windshield the outer tabs will release in the same way as if the whole console is pushed forward. This could be done with the credit card, but it's a bit tricky to know when the card is correctly placed.

Is your credit card being charged every time you insert it?

Sorted! I used a card to disengage the clips then a kitchen knife carefully inserted along the same line as the card to provide a little leverage and that was enough to move the clip mechanism and it just swung down. It was indeed a cable. Tucked it out the way, noise gone.

Thank you very much for your help with this.

Do you know if there is any permanent 12v power that I can tap into for a dashcam (should be some power there that won't give us a canbus error)

I'll be experimenting with this but I need power that turns off with ignition for radar detector, so the map light is ideal as it turns off a few minutes after power off. I can't imagine a permanent source as there is nothing there that needs permanent power.

If I can see correctly you are showing a 166 platform which is different than the 205 in terms of the overhead console.

Idea is the same, probably different plug. Take a picture of what you did because I'm interested as well.

Cant be that hard, use a test lamp or make a DIY lamp and try the connectors for constant power.

Vic, what would need permanent power in that console?
