Why not "C200"??

I know this isn't the first time the numbers don't match - my 2002 C230 was the only C230 with a 2.3l engine, I believe - but why is our 2.0l turbo called a C300?

Because it has a higher output than the C200 2.0 Petrol that is available elsewhere in the world. I have one, C200 2.0l is 184BHP. There is a C250 petrol and C300 petrol with higher outputs, sold in different markets.

To confuse the UK even more, there is a C200 and a C200 Bluetec.

The former is a 2l petrol, the latter a 1.6 diesel.

Because now the numbers reflect the performance rather than the actual capacity. And the have to. Some engines are used withe the same output. Here in Europe you have the C220d, C250d and the C300h. Al using the same 2.1 bi-turbo diesel engine. Ranging from 170 to 230 hp.

I'm pretty sure the C200 petrol out-performs the C200 diesel. Unless they're looking at the torque figure or something.

In asia country we have C250 petrol. 211hp and 350nm. It can be pretty confusing. No idea what they don't make the same. Must be marketing strategy.

Shame they don't offer the C250 or C300 petrols in the UK. We're a country of diesels though.

The UK C200 petrol outperforms the C220 Diesel with regards hp.

184 vs 170 hp respectively. Go figure!

At the end of the day, it's all about marketing. People don't want to buy upgrade to the new model and have a 'lower badge' than the previous one (goodness gracious, what would the neighbours think!). So MB and BMW have this nonsense numbering system which gets dafter as engines get smaller but performance is maintained. Part of the reason I de-badged.

Yeah.

The current C200 petrol performs better than the old C200 and is actually bigger in capacity also.

I confuses people. There are people who own SLK200's who think it's a 2 litre engine, rather than a supercharged 1.8. For what it matters.

Acc
C200 0-100 7,5
C220 0.100 7,7

Top speed
C200 237
C220 234

Agree that it performs better but when I chose the C220 BT I have both the performance and fuel efficiency, to be honest who will see the difference?

Yeah I agree there's really nothing between the C220 diesel and C200 petrol. Which is what they should both be called C200's really. Or C220's, whatever.

Most people would expect the C200 petrol to be slow and cumbersome, but in reality it's not.

Couldn't agree more! But maybe the real figures for performance is different? I i'll give a report of the top speed after my vacation in Germany.

The funniest part is that the CLA200 engine is the same engine as found in... the C180
