Improve performance: C180 Petrol

So far I'm enjoying my S205 1.6 petrol - in fact no gripes yet

However (rather obviously, I know) - when compared to my 325 it is somewhat lacking when it comes to performance. Getting a larger engine model is in principle for the extra wealthy, as new cars are taxed on a variety of factors, with the largest factors being vehicle weight, CO2 emissions and the biggest hitter: a HP/Kw tax.

Spurred on by a few other recent threads:

Anyone happen to know if the C180 engine has potential for a tune, or even if it's a 'reduced performance' model ? I'm a stranger to performance improvements, having been content to keep my fuel consumption low - but hope for suggestions for a faster ride

  • C180 - 1.6-liter with 156 HP (115 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft), fuel consumption of 5 liters / 100 km and CO2 emissions of 116 g/km
  • C200 - 2.0-liter with 183 HP (135 kW) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft), 6.4 liters / 100 km, 120 g/km

Brabus sounds out of reach, just going by name alone.

Has anyone here chipped or otherwise tuned their C180? Does it affect manufacturers warranty - or are there solutions you use where you remove the tune before a service ?

I believe vic viper has done this. It will invalidate warranty on components that could be damaged by such tampering.

I have done it, works great, feels like this is the way the car should be delivered. Bought the piggyback box from eBay.de, install wasn't a breeze but not very hard either.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I kinda guessed that manufacturer won't be overly impressed by tuning attempts, but nice regardless to be certain.

Given that the car shouldn't be in the garage (workshop) frequently the ideal solution sounds like a piggy-back ? Has anyone else chosen a solution based on removing the tune before a service ?

It can be done on the petrol engine as well. Tested it on a demo vehicle and works perfectly.

CPA chip tuning, RaceChip wasn't available when I bought it but CPA works just as good.
I had RaceChip in my former W204 with M274 so I have a pretty good insight of both systems.

Did you order Pro, Ultra or the Nitro Powerbox from CPA? Do this box need Power directly from the battery as the DTE box do?

I got the Ultra, I dont think the 200 Euro extra would do any noticable difference.

Does not require external Power, however if you are not handy with a spanner you shouldnt attempt to fit it yourself as it requires removal of IC and IC bracket.

Thanks for letting me know. I wasn't aware of the removal of the IC. I have the installation instructions for the DTE-Box here, and it look like it's plug'n play. Maybe they use different connectors or just don't mention the removal of IC.

Here's a copy of the DTE instructions:

Never seen that type of install, dont know why they would use the camshaft sensor.

The connector I am talking about used by the CPA unit is located below the IC, it uses both intake and manifold pressure sensors.

The camshaft sensors are probably used for the box to read the engine rpm

Edit: sorry my bad that's the crankshaft I was thinking about, but then again, you could probably read the engine rpm thru the camshaft sensor to..
