Ticking noise from pano roof

So from time to time I get a clicking/ticking noise from the front movable section of the pano roof when it's closed. It's provoked by twisting road surfaces and goes away if I open it even just slightly.

I'm going to have the dealer look at it but I wonder if anyone else has had any pano roof ticking/rattles that they solved themselves perhaps with a bit of grease or whatever.

ManiacGT, we used to get a very mild rattle over rough surfaces from our CLK 350 cabriolet's top, if I didn't open the top for like a week to two. Somewhat similar to your experience, once I opened (even a little) and closed it back, the sound used to completely disappear. We suspected it due to aging rubber seals, ability for the rubber seals to expand and contract. I didn't get it fixed since our car was out of warranty and a convertible top has so many moving parts, so it didn't bother us that much. It seems in your case, since the car is new, and pano isn't that complicated, this has to be something minor, like a screw that is loose. Good luck on your appointment, and let us know, it would be insightful to know why a new pano is causing it...

Thanks for the reply. To me it sounds like plastic parts rubbing so it's probably just in need of adjustment or lubrication.

Given your description, it sounds like body flex that is leading to a minimal movement between two disconnected surfaces (which would be any of the sealing surfaces around the pano roof) that movement is likely to cause some noises, I guess.

Wonder if the flexing could be marginally more on the estate bodyshell than the saloon, as any movement across the diagonal would be working across a much larger flat surface (ie roof) in this version. Of course, with no pano, the roof section would be much more rigid, so we are all reliant on the bracing around the glass section.

Suspect the solution will be lubricant, of some sort - if the theory is correct, as the elimination of the noise would be achieved through making the movement quiet, as opposed to stopping it, altogether.

I spent some time looking at the mechanism last night. The only thing that looked immediately obvious to me about it was the section of plastic atop the anti buffeting net. This is pushed down at the hinge sides by plastic under the moving glass section. Both plastic elements, that sit against each other without rubber or lubricant. So I placed a small amount of silicone lubricant on a cloth and wiped this around the top of the plastic section of the net.

No noise from the roof on my way to the office this morning. However this is just one journey, with a cooler external temperature so I can't convince myself it's sorted just yet.

So the ticking came back. Albeit quieter. I had it in the dealers, they couldn't repoduce it. Just got the car back and it's still ticking. Clearly whatever I did before needs repeating.

.....noticed the tick (here - 38N/121E - we sometimes call that a creak) every now and then when backing over the rounded curb driveway to street.

I've actually never even opened the sun/moon roof.

Been a long time since I had a convertible (university) or t-top (Navy).

Hope you are able to attenuate the tick/creak to your satisfaction.

I get perhaps the same noise on occasion. Opening the roof does stop it, but that's not ideal. I lubricated the seals but that didn't help. Will try lubricating the plastic too later.

The dealer has performed further lubrication which appears to have resolved this now.

To have work like that done, do you need to specially book the car in? I'm 35 miles from the dealer and don't want to waste too much time for them to try fix these niggles.

Mine has developed lots of squeaks and rattles over the last few months and 10k miles. Can't be bothered to traipse back to the dealer with all of them. Car simply isn't very well made, I've just accepted that now.

I get a bit of noise from the dash screen for the first few minutes while the car warms up, inevitable with plastics and temperature/material expansion. Other than that the car is very very quiet. Certainly once warmed up there's no noise from the materials in the car at all.

Really? More lube required then.

Clearly the question is more where to apply it as I'm guessing it's hinge rather than runner related.
