Winter Tyres
Is anyone else purchasing winter tyres for your c class? It is obligatory here in Switzerland.
Mercedes are offering a 17" and 18" rim. It's a shame for the car to look nasty for half of the year so thinking to go for the 18" although they are around $750 per wheel

Goodyear UltraGrip Ice WRT on the OEM 18" wheels here. First winter with them was excellent ... not too noisy, good handling, and excellent traction on snow and ice.

I bought a set of barely used 17" OEM rims on Ebay (Germany). Similar to below - looks like they had been taken off a brand new car
17" wheels on ebay
I've not yet purchased winter tyres but have narrowed it down to Nokian WR D4, Goodyear Ultragrip Performance Gen1 and Dunlop Wintersport 5. I want a tyre with good efficiency rating (C) and good wet performance (A or B)
All in, the additional set of winter wheels and tyres will cost me ~900 pounds (1200 Euros)

EQC 4matic AMG line Premium Plus replacing S213 220d 4matic with airmatic
Going to my dealer tomorrow to order my winter wheels and tyres. I live in northwest france so winters are mild compared to many of you here on the forum. But it is generally below 7deg dec to mar with occasional snow which is wet and slushy we also get freezing rain and freezing fog and many of our rural roads are very muddy due to the agricultural traffic. Mercedes sell a winter wheel package here for 1980 euro (200 more then in the netherlands!) With bridgestone blizzak lm32 tyres mo of course. The alternative for a 100 euro more is the same wheels as already fitted and michelin alpin 4 i am undecided any comments on the differing tyres?

Both tires very similar in performance, the Blizzaks are a tad softer and will grip better on snow, the Michelins are great on hard aurfaces, and winters here are often 70-80% dry roads.

Have placed my order for identical wheels as fitted on delivery and michelin alpin 5 winter tyres. My garage have given me a very good deal. I also have my set of glk winter wheels and tyres to sell to offset the costs. In the end the michelin seem a better tyre for my needs.
Just looking for some tyre bags as we store the tyres here which means transporting them in the car. Could not find bags big enough for the 235/60/17 glk wheels but hope the 225/50/17 wheels can be accomodated. Thinking of heyner bags which are on sale from amazon uk for 35 sterling delivered. Anyone use them?

For those running dedicated wheels with winter tyres, have you installed TPMS sensors? If so what type (OEM / aftermarket?) and how easy are they to calibrate / set up in the car? thanks.

No problem with the TPMS they come from a variety of vendors. Your tire shop will know which are required and have them for you.

As you would expect my garage quoted for the new rims, tyres, and tpms all mercedes oem. They suggested i did not need additional centre wheel covers but i have ordered the simple mercedes star on a silver background i can then keep the blue laurel wreath set for summer only as they seem to deteriorate very quickly with white marks appearing. Do not know why......

I am on a 12000/3year lease. I have heard all seasons run flat tires worn out quickly ~20000miles. That means I will need to change out tires before vehicle turn in. Do you recommend buying winter tire sets and split the mileage in Winter?
I have never bought tires before. Cost wise, $150/tire *4 + $20/tire installation? Anything else like pressure sensor or whats so ever IDK...
I am in NY so I guess snow tires are required.
Thanks!

If it is of any help I had a glk on a 3 yr cycle. I ran a set of winter wheels and tyres and summer wheels and tyres and covered about 30,000 miles over the 3 yrs. The winter tyres, dunlop wintersport 3 have 6.5mm of tread left am trying to sell the set now!, the summers had 5 to 6mm left they were continentals. The glk was a 4matic. I would have expected to replace the summer tyres before disposal had I not been running the 2 sets. I preferred to have the tyres on their own wheels quicker to change and I was not confident that removing and refitting on the same rims was a good idea for the tyre or the rim.....in those areas of europe where snow is the norm people have the two sets of wheels and tyres and the garage infrastructure is set up to provide storage of the spare set.
I have just ordered a set of rims the same as fitted on delivery and a set of michelin alpin 5 winter tyres.

I have my winter tires mounted on my regular wheels, and have not purchased another set of wheels and sensors. I find the tires alone easier to handle, and I have always been left with expensive wheels and sensors after selling a car, with a very limited resale market for those items. For me, it's simpler to just have the tires changed annually.

For those of you who have dedicated winter tires, and switch out the tires the other half of the year - where are you storing the tires during the months when you are not using them? We have a 2-car garage, and 2 cars; if I have to store 8 tires, there's no way they'll fit in the garage. The basement is no good either, as it is used as a fun room for the family with large TV, pool table, dart board, etc. Where are you storing your tires?

It is becoming ever more popular here now (Canada) where more and more tire shops as well as dealerships (my Merc as well) will store your off season set over the season for a nominal fee if not free if you purchase and do the swap over with them...it's becoming very convenient other than you have to take your vehicle there usually when everyone else is doing the same...I change 4 sets at home...a simple task with 2 floor jacks and have an off site storage bay for my business where my seasonals go during the off season.
