About Run Flats

I'm leasing the vehicle 12000miles/yr for 3 years. Will those run flats tires wear out before 36000miles? Does it mean I will need to change out all the tires before turn the vehicle in?

I do not have tire protection insurance and I do know run flats may wear out quicker than conventional tires. And they cannot be fixed with a puncture.

I am thinking to purchase a winter tire set (I am here in Albany, NY) so about 4 months a year I run with winter tires. - because I am changing out tires anyways, I prefer use winter tires during winter...

What are your recommendations?

Btw, this is my second car, so I know nearly nothing about tires before I saw threads about those run flats....

Thanks for helping!

I'm pretty close to you (down in Dutchess County at the intersection of 84/87). As far as i've read, the run flats will wear out fairly fast (closer to 25,000 miles). I've considered going to winter tires but then you don't have the security of having a spare if you need it. The tire protection insurance wouldn't help you from normal wear & tear but I got it anyway since a full set of these tires is about $1000 minus installation. If you do get a puncture i'd still repair it if it's between the treads. I talked to the dealer about this and they seconded that it's not "recommended" but they've seen plenty of repairs that held up. I always carry a plug kit in the trunk (i've had to use it several times on my other car).

As far as your lease is concerned, if you wear the tires out you're going to have to replace them anyway just to drive and pass inspection but I don't know if you'd get charged at the end of the lease if you don't do it. That may be in your paperwork.

I've been down this road a few times now. If it looks like you will not pass the lease turn-in inspection, and need tires, here's another option.

I just by a set of the same brand and type, but used. Ebay always has very good, solid used tires that are OEM brands, but for less than 1/3 the cost of new.

As long as you replace them with the exact same kind the car came with, you will have no issues. All together, it will save you a great deal of money. Just make sure there is at least the minimum tread thickness the dealers calls for on the replacement tires you will be buying, then have them mounted and balanced.

Ive never had an issue with trading a car with any set of tires. Tires are a wear item that has nothing to do with the car, for example they cant charge you for worn brake pads. In fact, car manufacturers have nothing to do with the tires at all as you have well noticed tires are are warranted by the tire maker not the car maker. Even snow tires should not be an issue, you can drive snow tires all year long if you wanted to since they meet all DOT requirements. Unless you show up with tires with wires poking out of the tread I wouldn't worry at all.

That would be good news. My understanding is that they are $2,000 per set.

My Mercedes lease states that all tires must be by same manufacturer, not be damaged , have at least 1/8 tread, and be of equal quality to those supplied with the vehicle. So in theory this means run flats with an equivalent speed rating. If you are turning car in and getting another MB the dealer will probably help give you an inspection pass. I do think snow tires may be a flag as would some super cheapo low speed rated tires.
I did have a BMW with run flats (hate them) and used snow tires which got me additional 'life'. The problem was that I still wound up getting two or three tires replaced because of damage. Also no spare is a big prob when you have snows on. Anyway, you are wise to think ahead on the tire situation. Buying some used ones before turning car in is an option although my experience is run flats completely complicate and make the tire equation more expensive.

... I'll sign up for $1,000 for a set of 4 OEM "run-flats" right now... I've heard they run $375-$450 each installed (vs. $200-$225 with the standard, non-run flat, low profile tires on my last C300 4MATIC Sport I bought at Mavis Tire).

Is that figure ($375+ each) sound accurate for the new OEM tires?

18"OEM (staggered) are around 1100 a set on Tire Rack. Not as bad as I would have thought. So with shipping and install you might be looking at 1300.

bradtj beat me to it but yes, ~$1000 on tirerack.com . I also like the other posters suggestion about buying them on ebay. I've purchased used tired for my infiniti on ebay before and saved a ton of cash. By used i'm talking 10-11/32" of remaining tread when new tires are typically 11-12/32", so in essence they're basically brand new.

If you're going to change them out, that's the way to do it for sure!
