eco start/stop

the eco stop start function on my car is hit and miss. Do you need to be driving under a certain speed for a period of time for it to be regular?

not a huge deal to me but just curious if its not working properly or there is certain requirements for it to kick in.

Yes, there are a whole list of requirements for it to activate.

Push the button and turn it off, it's not terribly difficult.

Hate it, hate it, HATE IT! Having to shut it off multiple times everyday is REALLY effin' annoying. Too bad we can't disable this stupid function more permanently like in a BMW...or at least not have it "on" by default.

This whole concept of the engine shutting off automatically to save fuel is by far my most hated option in today's automobiles...that and run flat tires.

Nope, it works in Sport and Sport+ also. Unless you turn it off manually.

You can program the customized mode to have it off.

Extremely annoying!

I still haven't worked out the logic of this system. Sometimes the engine stops, other times it doesn't. Sometimes the engine starts if you take your foot off the brake, other times the engine doesn't start until you touch the accelerator. Sometimes the hold system works but the engine doesn't stop; etc. etc. It drives me mad because you never quite know what's going to happen.
If, of course, you use customised mode it can be turned off in S+ but the car reverts to the Comfort setting the next day!
Someone at MB should have been sacked for coming up with such stupid systems. However, don't even get me going about the wiper switch and the crazy touchpad thing!

Not true for S+, eco is off
C and S, yes
Custom setting can be programmed with Eco off, so this is correct

I driven both the C300 and the C450 numerous times. The start/stop isn't to bad in the C450, but in the C300, it's awful.

Aside from the annoyance of having to shut it off multiple times each day, the system shuts the engine off too quickly at a stop...for instance in bumper to bumper traffic.

Inch up...engine restarts, stop...engine shuts off almost instantly...repeat 50 times until you're out of traffic.

You can control the operation of the Eco Start/Stop feature with brake pressure. This is very useful in stop and go traffic. If you come to a smooth stop without applying full brake pressure, the engine will continue to run. If you want the engine to stop, apply a little more pressure. The same applies to stopping at red lights.

I actually turned off this feature completely during break-in, until now which I actually leave it on. If the brakes are depressed ever so lightly, the system won't kick in; with this knowledge, I'm able to control when and where I want the engine to shut off. Love the feature. I do almost 95% city driving and it saves me a few bucks.

My mileage has improved significantly since new, partly due to this system as well as the seals are setting in; I was at 14.0L/100km, now hitting 12.xL/100km. I think after the engine settles more I should be able to hit 11ish.

But what is the issue?, you can hardly notice the engine stopping and starting, it wont affect your driving.

The main issue for me is the additional delay of the engine restarting when you hit the gas pedal.

If the situation requires quick acceleration, I don't want any additional hesitation on top of the engines turbo lag.

I have the same point. You hardly notice that the engine stops. Yes the old start/stop system of my previous car was slow. But in my C220d it starts so fas,t you instantly drives away. Maybe it because I have a diesel with a stronger starter, but still.

It won't last 50 times because the battery level will be to low. In my case it last for 5 or 6 times and after that the engine stays on, until the battery level is sufficient again.

OK...so I exaggerated. The system is still intrusive for me...and it adds to the hesitation from the turbo lag.

Perhaps a greater delay...say 5 seconds at a stop before engine shut off would be less intrusive for me while I'm stuck in rt. 93 traffic everyday.

I thought the Mercedes ECO shut off system doesn't use the starter...instead the engine restarts by firing the cylinder that was closest to firing before it stopped?
