Basically they're bumpers. The regulation forces manufacturers to add these on so the car can withstand a 5 MPH hit usually during parking. Here's the quote and the source:
They should use springs - like the kind wile-e-coyote used to jump after the road runner. They could be hooked up to sensors so they deploy when getting too close to another object and should make a "boing" noise when used.
If we branded them Acme Corporation and started licensing them out, we could make a killing.
This is ugly and there's no way around it. They should have made the C Coupe pillarless too. Probably just saving that for the E, I suppose.
I have no clue why they didn't make it pillarless it would have made it even more luxurious and airy inside. They also could have improved the hood shut line to match the S Coupe since they weren't going to made any front fascia or headlamp graphic adjustments.

I wouldn't expect them to ever make the C Coupe Pillar-less. It would rob sales from the E Coupe which is Pillar-less and costs much more.
These pics (courtesy of c450.com) were taken at 2016 Detroit auto show a week ago and reveal 2 ridiculously ugly bumps on the sides of the license plate on the rear bumper.
Any thoughts/confirmations that this is, indeed, how the US model will look ?
Also attaching a pic of C-coupe I took in London in December.
It has to do with the US 5 MPH bumper regulations. The S class coupe has it, Porches have it and The AMG GT. That's how it will look.
I still think it looks like absolute ****, literally the only imperfection on the car IMO, but as you said...even the supercars in the US have it, so, it is what it is. It's a product of the stupid *** country we live in, so we've just gotta deal with it.
My car won't see a single mile in Eco. Also, strong change of heart on whether or not it's a PITA.
i got used to it on my F30 its really not that bad. though after the first year of production so many people had complained BMW changed it so that the setting would save , so you wouldn't have to turn it off every time you started.
personally i don't mind the engine restarting so much, but at least on BMW it shuts off the AC compressor when its shut down so your level of AC changes which is annoying

I didn't like them either til this morning, bought my girl a C300 Coupe Sport with the ugly bumps, and while i was golfing she called and said someone bumped her in a parking lot while she was away, the ugly bumps kept the damage away from the car. now i need to find a replacement one, I will post how to take them off
Were you able to replace? Are they just glued on, or screwed?
